Subjectivity In-Between Times
This book is the first to systematically investigate how the notion of time is conceptualised in Jacques Lacan’s work. Through a careful examination of Lacan’s various presentations of time, Chenyang Wang argues that this notion is key to a comprehension of Lacan’s psychoanalytic thinking, and in particular to the way in which he theorises subjectivity. This book demonstrates that time is approached by Lacan not only as consciously experienced, but also as pre-reflectively embodied and symbolically generated. In an analysis that begins with Lacan’s “Logical Time” essay, Chenyang Wang articulates three temporal registers that correspond to Lacan's Real-Symbolic-Imaginary triad and also demonstrates how Lacan’s elaboration of other major themes including consciousness, body, language, desire and sexuality is informed by his original perspectives on time. Filling a significant gap in contemporary Lacanian studies, this book will provide essential reading for students and scholars of psychoanalytic theory, continental philosophy and critical theory.
New Microhistorical Approaches to an Integrated History of the Holocaust
In 1997, Saul Friedländer emphasized the need for an integrated history of the Holocaust. His suggestion to connect ‘the policies of the perpetrators, the attitudes of surrounding society, and the world of the victims’ provides the inspiration for this volume. Following in these footsteps, this innovative study approaches Holocaust history through a combination of macro analysis with micro studies. Le sel a profondément marqué la vie économique et sociale de l'actuelle République de Djibouti, au point qu'on l'a considéré comme l'or blanc du pays. Janus aux deux visages, tantôt il se présente comme un produit naturel, extrait de la banquise de sel qui borde le lac Assal ; tantôt, il a l'éclat des cristaux iodés livrés par les salines artificielles, créées dès l'aube du XXe siècle à Djibouti-ville. Faire l'histoire du sel de Djibouti, c'est étudier tant le site exceptionnel du lac Assal que l'environnement semi-industriel de Djibouti-ville. C'est également analyser, pour le XIXe et le XXe siècles, les stratégies aux dynamiques changeantes pour commercialiser le sel, l'unique richesse du territoire. C'est enfin s'intéresser aux sauniers, aux hommes libres exploitant, pour leur compte, les réserves naturelles du lac Blanc et aux travailleurs qu'ont recrutés plusieurs générations de firmes extractives.
