This collection ranges from the early papers - which introduced the staining methods that made it possible for scientists to chart conduction pathways throughout the brain with greater precision - to the later studies on the limbic system, the frontal cortex and basal ganglia.

Contemporary Research Methods in Neuroanatomy

As a source of information on neuroanatomical research methods this Volume is not without precedent. In 1957, at the initiative of Dr. W. F. Windle, a conference was held at the National Institutes of Health, the proceedings of which, edited by Dr. Windle and published by C. C. Thomas under the title "New Research Tech niques of Neuroanatomy", rapidly became something like a standard reference in the field of Neuromorphology. The present editors were emboldened to seek support for a second expose of contemporary research methods in Neuroanatomy by the success of this earlier publication, as well as by the consideration that the years elapsed since its appearance have been, perhaps, more prod...

I received my first introduction to the brain sciences in 1936 and 1937, for me the second and third years of the 7-year medical school curriculum at the University of Leiden. During those years my interest in the subject was aroused in particular by the brilliant lectures of the physiologist G. C. Rademaker - a prominent former member of the Rudolf Magnus school - and the neurohistologist S. T. Bok, noted especially for his histometric studies of the cerebral cortex. Fascinated as I was by everything I learned about the brain from these outstanding teachers, toward the end of their courses I began to notice conspicuous gaps that separated neurophysiology from neuroanatomy. In fact, I could ...

Biographical Memoirs

Biographic Memoirs Volume 88 contains the biographies of deceased members of the National Academy of Sciences and bibliographies of their published works. Each biographical essay was written by a member of the Academy familiar with the professional career of the deceased. For historical and bibliographical purposes, these volumes are worth returning to time and again.

Anatomy of Neuropsychiatry: The New Anatomy of the Basal Forebrain and Its Implications for Neuropsychiatric Illness, Second Edition presents the anatomical systems that take part in the scientific and clinical study of emotional functions and neuropsychiatric disorders. The book discusses the limbic system—the cortical and subcortical structures in the human brain involved in emotion, motivation, and emotional association with memory—at length and how this is no longer a useful guide to the study of psychiatric disorders. Newly revised, this book now includes chapters focusing on the anatomy of Basal Forebrain and Cerebellum Macrosystems and the role these macrosystems paly in motion, emotion, and neuropsychiatric illnesses. This book will help reader develop an understanding of the gross anatomical organization of the human forebrain. Reviews the key concepts of the Limbic System Examines the anatomy of the Basal Forebrain and the Greater Limbic Lobe Includes clinical and basic science boxes highlighting specific concepts, structures, or neuronal circuits from a clinical perspective Features ten brain dissection videos by the late Lennart Heimer, M.D.
