A Könyv a japán nyelvről bevezeti az olvasót a mai japán nyelvi kultúra, a hangtan, a nyelvtan, a szókincs, a japán nyelvváltozatok és a mindennapi nyelvhasználat ismeretébe. Külön fejezetek szólnak az írásrendszerről, a névadásról, az udvariassági nyelvről, a japán más nyelvekkel való kapcsolatáról, illetve a japán nyelv eredetének kutatásáról.
