"It began with a desperate call from Berlin…" Moments before Axel Mueller was killed in Berlin, he phoned Amy Knight in London. She heard the shouting and the shots before everything went quiet. Desperately, she called Ethan Harris who was already in Berlin on other business. As she joined him to investigate, they were soon under surveillance by the Berlin police and also in the sights of the German Intelligence Agency (BND), as they uncovered secrets from the Stasi background of BND agents, Huber and Schreiber. Axel had also been investigating the Intelligence Conferences, a group of European agencies planning the development of "UberKon" a covert super intelligence agency. As they are pursued by the police and BND, Ethan and Amy race to uncover the information which resulted in Axel's death while trying to avoid being killed themselves. In the process Ethan is shocked as Amy's true nature is revealed.

Refracting the Canon in Contemporary British Literature and Film
Contemporary works of art that remodel the canon not only create complex, hybrid and plural products but also alter our perceptions and understanding of their source texts. This is the dual process, referred to in this volume as “refraction”, that the essays collected here set out to discuss and analyse by focusing on the dialectic rapport between postmodernism and the canon. What is sought in many of the essays is a redefinition of postmodernist art and a re-examination of the canon in the light of contemporary epistemology. Given this dual process, this volume will be of value both to everyone interested in contemporary art—particularly fiction, drama and film—and also to readers whose aim it is to promote a better appreciation of canonical British literature.

Examples of plays from Oedipus to the present appear throughout the book, and individual chapters are dedicated to sustained discussions of William Shakespeare's King Lear, Tom Stoppard's Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, Arthur Miller's The Ride Down Mount Morgan, and Tennessee Williams's A Streetcar Named Desire. The author emphasizes Shakespeare and, especially, modern drama in the belief that these plays provide salient models of the theoretical principles of reading toward closure.
