Getting Better

On October 7th, 2007, his senior year of high school, Will Carter leaves work and heads home to get sleep before re-taking the SAT the following morning. Three weeks later, he wakes up in a hospital bed, a trach in my throat, covered in IV' s and scars, confused, and with a terrible pain in his head. He learns that he has suffered a brain injury and stroke and that he is waking up from a medically induced coma. Will takes what scraps and bits he has of his memory to reclaim his story, as he takes the reader on a harrowing 7-month journey from his car accident and coma to his recovery and return to high school. Will fights the internal battle of wanting to be the person he was before and accepting who he is now. He must fight to graduate high school, re-learn how to walk, and re-discover how to live his life again. He must strive to figure out what getting better really looks like. Will must come to terms with God and fight to hold onto his faith. He must finally come to see getting better as not something physical but something emotional, personal, and spiritual.

Meet Will Carter, but feel free to call him Carter. (Yes, he knows it's a lazy nickname, but he didn't have much say in the matter.) Here are five things you should know about him: 1. He has a stuttering problem, particularly around boobs and belly buttons. 2. He battles Attention Deficit Disorder every minute of every day unless he gets distracted. 3. He's a virgin, mostly because he's no good at talking to girls (see number 1). 4. He's about to start high school. 5. He's totally not ready. Join Carter for his freshman year, where he'll search for sex, love, and acceptance anywhere he can find it. In the process, he'll almost kill a trombone player, face off with his greatest nemesis, suffer a lot of blood loss, narrowly escape death, run from the cops (not once, but twice), get caught up in a messy love triangle, meet his match in the form of a curvy drill teamer, and surprise the hell out of everyone, including himself.

After an eventful freshman year and disastrous summer, fifteen-year-old Will Carter returns to Merrian High none the wiser. His sophomore year will present a host of new problems: the return of Scary Terry from juvie, the pregnant presence of Amber Lee, friends-with-benefits negotiations with Abby, prom night expectations, and the ever-constant harassment from his boys. When Abby announces that she might be transferring to a New York arts school, Carter's world is turned upside down and he'll be forced to make the biggest decision of his life. In his signature voice, author Brent Crawford details young Will Carter's high school struggles, this time focusing on Carter's discovery of his true passion and the sacrifices he'll need to make.

During his presidency, Jimmy Carter received a comprehensive analysis of his family's genealogy, dating back 12 generations, from leaders of the Mormon Church. More recently Carter's son Jeff took over the family history, determined to discover all that he could about his ancestors. This resulting volume traces every ancestral line of both Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter back to the original immigrants to America and chronicles their origins, occupations, and life dates. Among his forebears Carter found cabinet makers, farmers, preachers, illegitimate children, slave owners, indentured servants, a former Hessian soldier who fought against Napoleon, and even a spy for General George Washington at Valley Forge. With never-before-published historic photographs and a foreword by President Jimmy Carter, this is the definitive saga of a remarkable American family.

An A-Z of Type Designers

Review: "This illustrated A-Z features outstanding type designers from around the world, from Gutenberg to the present day. Arranged alphabetically by designer's name, the book contains over 260 biographical profiles. Entries are illustrated by key typefaces taken from a wide range of sources, including type specimens, original posters, private press editions and magazine covers, and also give a list of work and, where applicable, further reading references and a website address. An essential reference for typographers, graphic designers and students, the book also features a full index and eight short texts by leading typographers - Jonathan Barnbrook, Erik van Blokland, Clive Bruton, John Downer, John Hudson, Jean Francois Porchez, Erik Spiekermann and Jeremy Tankard - that cover a variety of different aspects of type design, including typeface revivals, font piracy, designing fonts for corporate identities and the role of nationality in type design."--BOOK JACKET
