"Using a method based on New Historicism, but with added emphasis on literature as cultural commentary, Andrew Cusack's study traces the motif's intertextual connections, how it receives meaning from non-literary discourses, and how it transmits meaning into the social sphere by molding individual and collective self-conceptions. The study draws on a corpus of ten prose narratives that reflect the vast scope of the motif and show how its function changes. The essay reads an Enlightened and modern critique of progress in Mozart's Cosi fan tutte. With numerous references to other operas and texts, and with a storyline that emphasizes inevitable, yet mutable aspects of human nature, Cosi presents an ambivalent picture of the ways in which even the most disinterested and best-informed attitude toward the past can affect the future. At the same time, the opera seems to embrace the notion of freedom of choice without rejecting tradition or repetition. The essay also comments on the performance of Cosi in Zurich in 2000, conducted by Nikolaus Harnoncourt, who often works with authentic period instruments.

Enlightened Monks
Enlightened Monks investigates the social, cultural, philosophical, and theological challenges the German Benedictines had to face between 1740 and 1803, and how the Enlightenment process influenced the self-understanding and lifestyle of these religious communities. It had an impact on their forms of communication, their transfer of knowledge, their relationships to worldly authorities and to the academic world, and also their theology and philosophy. The multifaceted achievements of enlightened monks, which included a strong belief in individual freedom, tolerance, human rights, and non-violence, show that monasticism was on the way to becoming fully integrated into the Enlightenment. Ulrich L. Lehner refutes the widespread assumption that monks were reactionary enemies of Enlightenment ideas. On the contrary, he demonstrates that many Benedictines implemented the new ideas of the time into their own systems of thought. This revisionist account contributes to a better understanding not only of monastic culture in Central Europe, but also of Catholic religious culture in general.

In this study of the criticism of the most idiosyncratic voice of the German Sturm und Drang, the authors try to explain why critics have so often failed to come to terms with Lenz's refusal to encourage the middle class and to cater to its tastes. While many of the first reviewers found Lenz's work liberating, after his death the consensus of critics - when they gave him any attention at all - was that his works were second-rate or worse, and Goethe's negative comments were often used to support this verdict. This volume traces Lenz's reception from the earliest reviews through to New Criticism, Lenz's "rediscovery," and the changes in focus after the 1992 Lenz bicentennial.
