Für eine moderne Stadtgeschichtsforschung hat sich die Wiederaneignung von Max Webers überlegungen zum Typus der okzidentalen Stadt als besonders inspirierend erwiesen. Weniger präsent ist demgegenüber, dass in den Debatten der Zeit um 1900 der ökonomische Aspekt des Stadtbegriffs von ganz erheblicher Bedeutung gewesen ist. Dieser Zusammenhang ist am Werk von Max Weber ablesbar. Deutlicher noch findet er sich bei Werner Sombart ausgestaltet, der gegenüber Produzenten und Fernhändlern den Konsumenten eine zentrale Rolle für Stadtentstehung und Stadtentwicklung zuweist. Der vorliegende Sammelband prüft die Ertragskraft konsumgeschichtlicher Konzepte und bezieht sie auf aktuelle Problemzusammenhänge der mittelalterlichen Stadtgeschichte.
