Stochastic and Integral Geometry

Stochastic and Integral Geometry

Stochastic geometry deals with models for random geometric structures. Its early beginnings are found in playful geometric probability questions, and it has vigorously developed during recent decades, when an increasing number of real-world applications in various sciences required solid mathematical foundations. Integral geometry studies geometric mean values with respect to invariant measures and is, therefore, the appropriate tool for the investigation of random geometric structures that exhibit invariance under translations or motions. Stochastic and Integral Geometry provides the mathematically oriented reader with a rigorous and detailed introduction to the basic stationary models used in stochastic geometry – random sets, point processes, random mosaics – and to the integral geometry that is needed for their investigation. The interplay between both disciplines is demonstrated by various fundamental results. A chapter on selected problems about geometric probabilities and an outlook to non-stationary models are included, and much additional information is given in the section notes.

Lectures on Convex Geometry

Lectures on Convex Geometry

This book provides a self-contained introduction to convex geometry in Euclidean space. After covering the basic concepts and results, it develops Brunn–Minkowski theory, with an exposition of mixed volumes, the Brunn–Minkowski inequality, and some of its consequences, including the isoperimetric inequality. Further central topics are then treated, such as surface area measures, projection functions, zonoids, and geometric valuations. Finally, an introduction to integral-geometric formulas in Euclidean space is provided. The numerous exercises and the supplementary material at the end of each section form an essential part of the book. Convexity is an elementary and natural concept. It plays a key role in many mathematical fields, including functional analysis, optimization, probability theory, and stochastic geometry. Paving the way to the more advanced and specialized literature, the material will be accessible to students in the third year and can be covered in one semester.

Strategic Management in the Aviation Industry

This book provides a comprehensive overview of current strategic challenges and measures required to meet those challenges in a dynamic industry. Experts from aviation practice and management, in addition to acknowledged scholars, contribute to this volume and combine academic expertise with economic and business perspectives in an unprecedented way for the aviation field. The focus is not restricted to passenger airlines. The five parts of the book additionally include chapters on alliance management and formation, strategic issues for air freight carriers and airport companies, as well as impacts the airline industry exerts on its environment. The book combines both concepts and results from recent academic research with applications and case studies from major industry players. Readership includes academics, students on advanced aviation courses, senior aviation professionals in airline, airport and supplier companies, international organizations and governmental agencies.

Stochastic Geometry is the mathematical discipline which studies mathematical models for random geometric structures. This book collects lectures presented at the CIME summer school in Martina Franca in September 2004. The main lecturers covered Spatial Statistics, Random Points, Integral Geometry and Random Sets. These are complemented by two additional contributions on Random Mosaics and Crystallization Processes. The book presents a comprehensive and up-to-date description of important aspects of Stochastic Geometry.

Integralgeometrie

"The authors emphasize the measure-theoretical component of geometry in studying geometric properties of invariant measures under the action of the translation or the motion group. Thereby the representation is concentrated on Hadwiger's convex ring in R d . (The authors are known specialists in this field.) The measure-theoretical approach is chosen twice: first, in form of invariant measures on the transformation groups or on sets of affine subspaces (Chapter I) and, secondly, by invariant geometric measures for the convex bodies and their finite unions (Chapter II). The latter means that the classical quermassintegrals are refined to Federer's curvature measures which leads to local as we...

Asymptotic Geometric Analysis

Asymptotic Geometric Analysis is concerned with the geometric and linear properties of finite dimensional objects, normed spaces, and convex bodies, especially with the asymptotics of their various quantitative parameters as the dimension tends to infinity. The deep geometric, probabilistic, and combinatorial methods developed here are used outside the field in many areas of mathematics and mathematical sciences. The Fields Institute Thematic Program in the Fall of 2010 continued an established tradition of previous large-scale programs devoted to the same general research direction. The main directions of the program included: * Asymptotic theory of convexity and normed spaces * Concentrati...

The Future of Legal Europe: Will We Trust in It?

  • Categories: Law

With this Liber Amicorum, around 50 contributors from the legal and judicial professions, from academia and from politics pay tribute to Dr Wolfgang Heusel, the Director of the Academy of European Law (ERA) in Trier from 2000 to 2020. The contributions provide a thorough analysis of some of the most relevant legal and political challenges faced by the European Union, including in the fields of data protection rules, artificial intelligence, the rule of law, human rights protection, institutional reform of the EU and changes in the legal and judicial professions. The book is primarily aimed at postgraduate students, legal practitioners and scholars interested in EU legal matters.
