To achieve full utilization of each harvested tree, interest centers on use of all of the tree components. The objective of the study is to determine the influence of the morphological characteristics of pulp fiber from 12 western U.S. softwood species, representative of a wide range of fiber. The effect of the morphology of the wood pulp fiber as distinguished from that of the wood fiber is emphasized because differences in performance of fiber-based products are traced to the pulp fiber. Interrelationships of fiber morphology and pulp sheet properties are discussed. The results indicate that it is not possible to fully characterize the performance of a pulp by a single morphological characteristic and that the morphological characteristics significantly influence strength properties of sheets.

Notes on the Manufacture of Wood Pulp and Wood-pulp Papers

James Dunbar provides a practical guide to the production of wood pulp and papers in this early 20th century study. Drawing on his experience in the paper industry, Dunbar explains the various processes involved in producing pulp and paper, from pulping and refining to beating, drying, and finishing. This edition includes updated appendices and a new foreword by a leading paper industry expert. Biorefinery in the Pulp and Paper Industry

The traditional pulp and paper producers are facing new competitors in tropical and subtropical regions who use the latest and largest installed technologies, and also have wood and labor cost advantages. Due to the increasing global competition, the forest products prices will continue to decrease. To remain viable, the traditional producers need to increase revenue by producing bioenergy and biomaterials in addition to wood, pulp, and paper products. In this so-called Integrated Products Biorefinery, all product lines are highly integrated and energy efficient. Integrated Products Biorefineries present the forest products industry with a unique opportunity to increase revenues and improve ...
