L'encyclopédisme au XVIIIe siècle

It is well-known that the 18th Century "Encyclopedism" took many forms and circulated them through very different channels. Contributions focus first on the press ( Journal encyclopedique, Journal historique et litteraire, Journal general de l'Europe ) and then the publications such as Encyclopedie portative (Boubers), Cyclopedia (Chambers), Encyclopedie (Diderot and d'Alembert), Dictionnaire universel (Robinet), etc. Special attention is given to printers (J.-J.Tutot) and the counterfeiting and literary piracy. Finally the contents of various private libraries in Liege and of the papers submitted for the contests organized by the Societe d'Emulation are scrutinized for tracks and influences of "Encyclopedism." French text."

The Silent Attack

“An enthralling account of how German Special Forces fought to take and hold the key river crossings to allow the main German Army to swarm into France.”—Firetrench Much has been written about the capture of Fort Eben-Emael in Belgium by German paratroopers, on May 10, 1940. This operation marked the first use of gliders and shaped charges—and proved it possible to drop paratroopers behind enemy lines. Training, secrecy, accuracy and speed linked to the element of surprise made these men lethal, causing chaos among Belgian soldiers. However, it should be stressed that these paratroopers were part of a larger group: The Sturmablteilung Koch (Koch Assault Group), the elite of the Luftw...

Analysing a period of 'hidden history', this book tracks the fate of the English Jesuits and their educational work through three major international crises of the eighteenth century: · the Lavalette affair, a major financial scandal, not of their making, which annihilated the Society of Jesus in France and led to the forced flight of exiled English Jesuits and their students from France to the Austrian Netherlands in 1762; · the universal suppression of the Jesuit order in 1773 and the English Jesuits' remarkable survival of that event, following a second forced flight to the safety of the Principality of Liège; · the French Revolution and their narrow escape from annihilation in Liège...
