Statistics And Control Of Stochastic Processes: The Liptser Festschrift

This volume contains papers presented at the Steklov Seminar on Statistics and Control of Stochastic Processes. For the past three decades, the seminar has determined the development, in a number of important directions, of the theory of random processes not only in the USSR (now Russia) but in the whole world. It was organised by A N Shiryaev in collaboration with N V Krylov and R Sh Liptser. It started off with optimal stopping and filtering with applications to engineering, and very soon extended its interests to more general problems of stochastic control, causal and anticipating stochastic calculus, limit theorems for semimartingales, martingale methods in queueing theory, foundations of statistics of random processes and, in recent years, mathematical finance. Many studies, for example of stochastic PDEs or extended stochastic integrals, anticipated largely Western works. The contributions in this book are devoted to the hottest topics and united by a martingale methodology which was the key idea of the seminar.

Fluorescence Microscopy and Fluorescent Probes

The April 1997 conference held in Prague attracted the cream of primarily European and Russian researchers (with a handful from the US, primarily from the U. of Maryland School of Medicine) to the burgeoning biological and medical applications of innovative optical technology, particularly laser confocal fluorescence microscopy. Six invited review lectures illuminate these recent developments and their role in cell biology, including computer simulations of molecular behavior. The 34 other papers focus on the major themes of: new developments in fluorescence instrumentation; fluorescent probes; nucleic acid labels; and other fluorescent labels, markers, and fluorogenic substrates. Sonochemistry and cavitation are rapidly increasing in importance in modern chemistry as a result of many significant achievements made in recent years. In this current and comprehensive text, the author clearly details and illustrates these developments as well as the fundamental concepts. Much attention is given to the fundamental problems, such as the general kinetics of sonochemical reactions: energetic yields; the principles of the cavitation diffusion theory; the place of acoustic energy among other physical methods of action on matter; and the new electrical theory of cavitation phenomena, sonochemical reactions and sonoluminescence initiation (the theory developed by Professor Margul...
