Volunteer Police in the United States
This work examines in-depth the phenomenon of volunteer policing in the United States. Due to a combination of municipal budget cuts, decreased manpower, and a renewed interest in community partnership, everyday citizens are increasingly joining the police rank and file. This trend provides low-cost solutions for a number of policing problems, but also brings its own special challenges and considerations. This work provides a historical overview of volunteer police in the United States and abroad; an practical overview of volunteer programs throughout the United States including training programs, requirements and qualifications; a close examination of two central types of laws governing volunteer police units: the "Stand Your Ground" law and the "Good Samaritan" law; and overview of the dangers that can face volunteer police units, and a comparative analysis with volunteer programs worldwide. Leaders in the Middle East and North Africa
The study of politics in the MENA region has traditionally been dominated by historical and case study approaches. In this innovative book, Özgür Özdamar and Sercan Canbolat instead adopt a social science-based methodology to reconsider the dynamics of power and leadership in Africa and the Middle East. By analysing the psychological profiles of fourteen leaders across eight countries and three non-state organizations, they develop a nuanced portrait of modern leadership. Using this approach, the authors are able to draw connections between apparently disparate political ideologies, from Sunni Islamism to Shia revolutionism, from secular nationalism and armed non-state groups. Demonstrating the previously unacknowledged commonalities and divergences in these leaders' approaches, Özdamar and Canbolat illuminate their tactics and strategies and offer novel insights into how best to negotiate with them.

"Between Freedom and Security" is an attempt at an interdisciplinary, humanistic-technical consideration of the problem of the need of the self-realizing human being to meet the requirements imposed on him by, among other things, technical norms and legal regulations, which in a certain sense form the framework for his functioning (in a sense the limitation of the individual) and his subjective reception of freedom. Recognizing that the need for freedom and the need for security are constitutive for the self-realizing subject, the contributors present the different aspects of security and the constraints associated with it, and make suggestions for bridging the existing dissonance between what is objectively necessary and what is subjectively and individually justified.
