Chronobiotechnology and Chronobiological Engineering

High blood pressure (BP) (with fats and smoking) is one of the three roots of cardio-cerebro-renovascular disease affecting up to 25% of the adult population. Hence, high blood pressure should be recognized and treated, to reduce any complications and prolong life, as noted by Michael Weber of the Veterans Administration Hospital in Long Beach, California. He further emphasizes the need for monitoring before one starts the treatment of high blood pressure. Indeed, he refers to the results of the Australian study on mild hypertension with a large percentage of placebo responders and rightly suggests that many people are treated who should not be because of 'white-coat-associated high blood pressure'. He also points to the lack of standardization of techniques for data analysis and of methods of BP measurement. Ambulatory monitoring under usual condi tions without concomitant recording of events does not allow even a qualitative assessment of the impact of varying stimuli, in weber's opinion.

Rethinking the Clinical Gaze

This book draws on medical sociology and science and technology studies to develop a novel conceptual framework for understanding innovation processes, using the case study of deep brain stimulation in paediatric neurology. It addresses key questions, including: How are promising and potentially disruptive new health technologies integrated into busy resource-constrained clinical contexts? What activities are involved in establishing a new clinical service? How do social and cultural forces shape these services, and importantly, how are understandings of ‘health’ and ‘illness’ reconfigured in the process? The book explores how the ideals of patient-centred medicine influence innovation in the clinic, and it introduces the concept of patient-centred proto-platforms. It argues that patient-centred innovation can constitute an expansion of medical power, as the clinical gaze is directed not only towards the body but also towards the patient as a social being. This will be an innovative and insightful read for academics and advanced students, as well as health service researchers with an interest in technology adoption processes.

Shaped Beam Radiosurgery

Novalis® Shaped Beam Radiosurgery has set new standards by delivering highly precise radiation treatments to tumors anywhere in the body through the use of a proprietary multileaf collimator. By shaping the radiation beam to the exact contours of the tumor or lesion, Novalis permits maximum dose delivery to the entire tumor while protecting healthy tissue; this makes it eminently suitable for the treatment of irregularly shaped tumors. This book provides a complete guide to radiosurgery treatments with Novalis. After a thorough discussion of the clinical and technical basis for Shaped Beam Radiosurgery, current clinical applications are considered in detail, including brain, body, skull base, and spinal tumors as well as arteriovenous malformations. Careful consideration is also given to future developments and applications, including new technologies that promise to offer even more accurate treatments. This state-of-the-art book will appeal to a wide audience of physicians and their multidisciplinary clinical and technical collaborators.

Operative Neuromodulation

This is the second part in a two-volume work on neuromodulation. It describes the techniques and procedures applied by direct contact with the central nervous system or cranial nerves (in order to modulate the function of neural networks) or in deeply located structures inside the nervous system (in order to alter the function on specific networks).
