Half of European Ennominae, a total of 141 species are covered in this volume, including difficult genera like Crocallis, Aspitates and Dyscia. Not less than 709 specimens are illustrated in 16 colour plates. For each species the following information is provided: taxonomic data, description, distribution, phenology, biology including host plants, habitat, similar species, male genitalia, including the everted vesica, female genitalia, and distribution map. Genetic data from DNA barcoding is provided for most species. 145 text-figures of diagnostic characters and other morphological structures. The taxonomic part includes new synonymies, status revisions, new combinations and numerous new distribution data. A systematic catalogue of the European species and the adjacent regions of North Africa, Macaronesia, Turkey and Middle East is included also.

The World Catalogue of the Conopidae offers the first complete list of this Diptera family worldwide since 1919. 808 recent and fossil species, together with their synonyms, belonging to 57 genera are listed. All original descriptions have been verified by the author. Type material and its depository is described for every species, the published distribution for each species is documented at the country level, and a complete list of references is provided for every record. Published information concerning hosts, possible hosts and egg carriers is compiled, with some 309 host species being reported for 73 species of Conopidae. With more than 1450 literature citations, this catalogue presents by far the most complete taxonomic assessment of this family produced to date.

In May 2004, the Alexander Koenig Zoological Research Museum hosted the Fifth International Symposium on Tropical Biology. This series was established at the ZFMK in the early 1980s, and has variably focused on systematics and ecology of tropical organisms, with an emphasis on Africa. Previous volumes are those edited by Schuchmann (1985), Peters and Hutterer (1990), Ulrich (1997), and Rheinwald (2000). The symposium in 2004 was organized by the Entomology Department under the direction of Michael Schmitt.
