The Global Journey of Football: From the Origins of the Beautiful Game to Its Recent Use as a Social Catalyst
Football’s consolidation as the world’s most popular sport is the result of both the inherent attributes of the game, that is, its simplicity and universality, as well as the historical processes that have contributed to the expansion of this sport throughout time. Although the game has undergone very little structural transformation in the last decades, one of most notable developments in the world of football has taken place in the new application of the sport as a tool for social change. This has generated a true global social movement encompassing a multitude of actors such as national governments, the private sector, international organizations and NGOs, around the issue of development and peace through sport. With this background, the purpose of this book is two-fold: 1) Provide an overview of the history, evolution and global expansion of football, 2) bring to light the recent transformation experienced by the game as a social movement and as an agent of community change. This part includes the grassroots project “Goals for Peace” in Colombia and the Philippines, which aims at assessing the ways and extent to which this sport can be a transformative tool.

An Economic Roadmap to the Dark Side of Sport
This Palgrave Pivot surveys facts and cases exhibiting and exemplifying corruption in sport. The standard economic theory (economics of crime, game theory) is introduced alongside the economic methods (sanctions, etc.) which are currently derived from it to combat corrupt sport and their limitations. The complexity and multidimensional nature of sports corruption are examined, and a focus is applied to certain types of corruption that are unique to the sports industry. Corruption is revealed to be the outcome of weak and deficient governance structures. The book is divided into three volumes. Volume II presents a variety of corruption facts in different sports, in different countries and continents in order to exhibit how much corrupt sport is globalised. Some changes in governance are suggested that may pave the way to more effective combat against corruption in sports. Volumes I and III (available separately) address Sport Manipulations and Economic Crime in Sport, respectively. Advances in Visual Computing
It is with great pleasure that we present the proceedings of the 6th Inter- tional, Symposium on Visual Computing (ISVC 2010), which was held in Las Vegas, Nevada. ISVC provides a common umbrella for the four main areas of visual computing including vision, graphics, visualization, and virtual reality. The goal is to provide a forum for researchers, scientists, engineers, and pr- titioners throughout the world to present their latest research ?ndings, ideas, developments, and applications in the broader area of visual computing. This year, the program consisted of 14 oral sessions, one poster session, 7 special tracks, and 6 keynote presentations. The response to the call for papers was very good; we received over 300 submissions for the main symposium from which we accepted 93 papers for oral presentation and 73 papers for poster p- sentation. Special track papers were solicited separately through the Organizing and Program Committees of each track. A total of 44 papers were accepted for oral presentation and 6 papers for poster presentation in the special tracks.
