Prof. Dr. Mahmud Es'ad Coşan hocamız, 2 Aralık 1991 tarihinde Mustafa Selami Efendi Tekkesi'nde Tabakatü's-Sofiyye sohbetlerine başlamış, amacını da şöyle ifade etmiştir: "Bizler de karınca kararınca takva yolunda, Rabbimizin rızası yolunda yürüyen insanlar olduğumuzdan, 'Bu yolun bizden önceki büyükleri, selef-i salihınimiz neler söylemişler, onların nasihatlarından istifade edelim; nasıl yaşamışlar, hayatları bize örnek olsun!' diye, tasavvuf aleminin büyüklerinin hayatlarını okumayı; sözlerini dinleyip, belleyip mucebince amel etmeyi düşünerek; Nişaburlu Ebû Abdirrahman es-Sülemî Hazretleri'nin, tasavvuf ilminde kaynak olan, ana eser olan, müracaat kitabı olan Tabakatü's-Sofiyye'sini okumağa başladık."
