European Security in Transition

Security Studies
As an important aspect of human polity, the concept of security has an important place and space in politics. Though regularly mentioned or referred, the concept is rarely given a proper definition, usually left in the shadows of politics and policymaking and usually referred as a cause to an effect. Within the framework of this book, classic, modern and post-modern security issues are analyzed, while also focusing on the classical and diverse conceptual dimensions of security, current problems are also evaluated, especially in the axis of post-modern security studies. In security studies, a distinction is usually made between classical and post-modern approaches, but in this study, both are considered together. One of the important features of this work is that it offers a perspective from Turkish experts on the concept of security in international relations.
Turkish-American Relations in the 21st Century
Turkish-American relations have been considered a model partnership between a great and middle power during the Cold War due to the positive nature of relations, being advantageous to both sides. While the United States took advantage of Türkiye’s geopolitical position and military strength against the USSR, Türkiye benefited from American economic power and military technology. However, with the end of the Cold War and the emergence of new regional and global developments, a stable framework to clarify and shape Turkish-American relations has not yet been crafted. Additionally, crises such as the non-approval of the 1 March memorandum in 2003 to support the American war effort in Iraq and the 15 July 2016 coup attempt in Türkiye further distanced these two historical allies. This books aims at analyzing Turkish foreign and security policies in the 21st century. Turkey’s foreign and security policies have become the focus of academic discussions since Turkey is located in the middle of the most unstable region in the world.
