This book is a tribute to the first modern urban planner and his product: the Eixample, which is today the thriving and undisputed center of the Barcelona metropolitan area. The city of Barcelona as constructed over the last 150 years on the strength of Ildefons Cerdà's 1859 'Project for the Reform and Expansion' bears living witness to the modernity of a way of thinking and making the city. An appreciaton of the values of the Eixample that have taken shape in the last century and a half affords illuminating insights into what it means to plan, design and build a city. The chapter structure is devoted to an orderly analysis in the first instance of the elements that articulate the construction of the Eixample -- the residential fabric, the grid, the street, the chamfered corner and the sewers -- and then of the city blocks and the various configurations associated with housing, industry, amenities and open spaces. The book intentionally focuses on the Eixample as a whole -- what we know as the Cerdà Eixample -- instead of confining itself to the more central Eixample traditionally associated with Modernista architecture.

Smart Sensors for Real-Time Water Quality Monitoring

Sensors are being utilized to increasing degrees in all forms of industry. Researchers and industrial practitioners in all fields seek to obtain a better understanding of appropriate processes so as to improve quality of service and efficiency. The quality of water is no exception, and the water industry is faced with a wide array of water quality issues being present world-wide. Thus, the need for sensors to tackle this diverse subject is paramount. The aim of this book is to combine, for the first time, international expertise in the area of water quality monitoring using smart sensors and systems in order that a better understanding of the challenges faced and solutions posed may be available to all in a single text.

Flow Analysis: A Practical Guide reviews flow techniques for automating chemical analysis with the goal of increasing efficiency and producing better analytical results. Various applications for flow techniques are reviewed including industrial process monitoring (for example, foods and beverages, drugs and pharmaceuticals); as well as agricultural, life science, radioactivity, and environmental analysis with an emphasis on the latter. This book is a valuable resource for young scientists or graduate-level students who want to learn how to introduce flow techniques into their experiments, and for experts who need specific and technical details to develop complete experimental systems. - Includes descriptions of the theoretical and technical bases of the most important flow techniques - Focuses on new trends in the field such as using flow techniques for radioactivity and environmental applications - Features instructions for coupling different types of detectors online with flow systems

Application of Particle and Laser Beams in Materials Technology

The development of advanced materials with preselected properties is one of the main goals of materials research. Of especial interest are electronics, high-temperature and supemard materials for various applications, as well as alloys with improved wear, corrosion and mechanical resistance properties. The technical challenge connected with the production of these materials is not only associated with the development of new specialised preparation techniques but also with quality control. The energetic charged particle, electron and photon beams offer the possibility of modifying the properties of the near-surface regions of materials without seriously affecting their bulk, and provide uniqu...
