On L1-Approximation

This monograph discusses the qualitative linear theory of best L^T1-approximation from finite-dimensional subspaces. It presents a survey of recent research that extends "classical" results concerned with best-uniform approximation to the more general case. The work is organized to serve as a self-study guide or as a text for advanced courses. It begins with a basic introduction to the concepts of approximation theory before addressing 1- or 2-sided best approximations from finite-dimensional subspaces and approaches to the computation of these. At the end of each chapter is a series of exercises that give the reader an opportunity to test understanding and also contain some theoretical digressions and extensions of the text.

The Jews of the Soviet Union

This is a comprehensive and topical history of the Jews in the Soviet Union and is based on firsthand documentary evidence and the application of a pioneering research method into the fate of national minorities. Within a four-part chronological framework, Professor Pinkus examines not only the legal-political status of the Jews, and their reciprocal relationship with the Soviet majority, but also the impact of internal economic, demographic and social processes upon the religious, educational and cultural life of Soviet Jewry. A second layer of analysis describes in depth the complex linkages between the Jews of the Soviet Union, the Jews in other diasporas and the state of Israel itself. The Jews of the Soviet Union marks a major contribution to the historiography and social analysis of its subject and provides a worthy companion to Professor Pinkus's acclaimed documentary study The Soviet Union and the Jews 1948-1967.

n-Widths in Approximation Theory

My original introduction to this subject was through conservations, and ultimate ly joint work with C. A. Micchelli. I am grateful to him and to Profs. C. de Boor, E. W. Cheney, S. D. Fisher and A. A. Melkman who read various portions of the manuscript and whose suggestions were most helpful. Errors in accuracy and omissions are totally my responsibility. I would like to express my appreciation to the SERC of Great Britain and to the Department of Mathematics of the University of Lancaster for the year spent there during which large portions of the manuscript were written, and also to the European Research Office of the U.S. Army for its financial support of my research endeavors. Thanks are...

Visual Aggression

Why does a society seek out images of violence? What can the consumption of violent imagery teach us about the history of violence and the ways in which it has been represented and understood? Assaf Pinkus considers these questions within the context of what he calls galleries of violence, the torment imagery that flourished in German-speaking regions during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Exploring these images and the visceral bodily responses that they produced in their viewers, Pinkus argues that the new visual discourse on violence was a watershed in premodern conceptualizations of selfhood. Images of martyrdom in late medieval Germany reveal a strikingly brutal parade of passio...

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 17th Annual Conference on Learning Theory, COLT 2004, held in Banff, Canada in July 2004. The 46 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from a total of 113 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on economics and game theory, online learning, inductive inference, probabilistic models, Boolean function learning, empirical processes, MDL, generalisation, clustering and distributed learning, boosting, kernels and probabilities, kernels and kernel matrices, and open problems.

Finding Our Fathers

In this work Dan Rottenberg shows how to successfully trace your Jewish family back for generations by probing the memories of living relatives; by examining marriage licenses, gravestones, ship passenger lists, naturalization records, birth and death certificates, and other public documents; and by looking for clues in family traditions and customs.
