Development of Auditory and Vestibular Systems

Development of Auditory and Vestibular Systems fourth edition presents a global and synthetic view of the main aspects of the development of the stato-acoustic system. Unique to this volume is the joint discussion of two sensory systems that, although close at the embryological stage, present divergences during development and later reveal conspicuous functional differences at the adult stage. This work covers the development of auditory receptors up to the central auditory system from several animal models, including humans. Coverage of the vestibular system, spanning amphibians to effects of altered gravity during development in different species, offers examples of the diversity and compl...

This past decade has led to many significant advances in the understanding of the function of excitatory amino acids in synaptic transmission. The cloning of the ionotropic and metabotropic glutamate receptor families of receptor proteins has produced new strategies for the pharmacological modulation of glutamate transmission. The engineering of transgenic animals with modified expression of receptor proteins has created new insights into the function, dysfunction and possible pathology causally related to glutamate receptors. Advances in the pharmacology of glutamate receptors has led to clinical research addressing multiple therapeutic applications of drugs that act on excitatory amino acid systems. A number of NMDA receptor anatagonists have now been studied in humans. AMPA/kainate and metabotropic receptor active compounds have left the preclinical realms of research and have moved towards or are in the clinic.

Photochemistry Volume 48

This volume combines reviews on the latest advances in photochemical research with specific topical highlights in the field. Starting with periodical reports of the recent literature on organic and computational aspects including reports on computational photochemistry and chemiluminescence of biological and nanotechnological molecules, photochemistry of alkenes, dienes and polyenes, aromatic compounds and oxygen-containing functions. The final chapter of this section is a review of industrial application of photochemistry from 2014 to 2019. Coverage continues with highlighted topics, in the second part, from ruthenium-caged bioactive compounds, advances in logically and light induced system...

The Neurobiology of Pain

The Neurobiology of Pain

The last decade has seen major advances in the neurobiology of pain, primarily resulting from a deeper understanding of the way in which pain signals are coded and processed in the nervous system. This volume in the Molecular and Cellular Neurobiology is the first book for many years to present an integrated overview of the current state of research into the neurobiology of chronic and acute pain. While recent molecular aspects of nociception are covered in some detail, the book also emphasises the importance of viewing the pain experience as the co-ordinated response of many different areas of the nervous system. The molecular advances are set in the context of the neurobiological system of...

Sensory Mechanisms of the Spinal Cord

The third edition of this monograph continues to have the goal of providing an overview of current thought about the spinal cord mechanisms that are responsible for sensory processing. We hope that the book is of value to both basic and clinical neuroscientists. Several changes have been made in the presentation, as well as additions because of the research advances that have been made during the past decade. Chapters 3 and 4 in the previous edition have been subdivided, and now the morphology of primary afferent neu rons of the dorsal root ganglia is described in Chapter 3 and the chemical neuroanatomy 4. The description of the dorsal hom in the previous Chapter 4 of these neurons in Chapte...
