In this inspiring meditation, Patrick S|skind considers the two great forces of human existence. He draws on scenes as varied as a young couple having oral sex while stuck in traffic, and an elderly Thomas Mann tumbling back into forbidden love. S|skind then dazzles as he writes about Orpheus and Jesus, comparing their very different stories of death conquered through love.

Poetry. Art. Comics. Sommer Browning sees things we don't see, even if they're right in front of us. That's what distinguishes the great thinkers of our time! They look at the stars and they ask 'how is that I can see?' They look at the color of a flower and say, 'How is that this is red?' Sommer Browning looks at a circle and sees a urethra. She sees a 'view of my head from a second story walk-up.' She sees the abyss. And a pizza. Her humor is so unpretentious, so unique--yet outrageously minimalistic, that it achieves a kind of scientific greatness. THE CIRCLE BOOK shows how even the most basic shape--a circle--can be transcended by the power of language. What's happening when we look at a circle and see the body of Christ? Something hilariously mystical.--Bianca Stone

The Elasticity of Life

The Elasticity of Life

Elasticity is absolutely necessary for living a normal life. This fact is cruelly revealed when respiratory, cardiac, digestive, sensory, motor, reproductive or aesthetic problems appear following the inexorable decline of our elastic capital. The protection and maintenance of this capital is one of life’s priorities since this declination begins at the age of twenty and accelerates in times of crises and pandemics. However, there are no therapies yet designed to remedy it. The first part of the book explains the consequences surrounding a lack of elasticity in the skin, the most visible decline, and then other defects in elasticity throughout our bodies, exploring places rarely mentioned. The second part describes the research fighting against elasticity anomalies and examines useful behaviors to protect our elastic capital (e.g. our diets and physical and cognitive activities). This last point is at the heart of current social debates on nutritional, behavioral, environmental and even ethical levels.

The Work of Art in the World

Celebrating art and interpretation that take on social challenges, Doris Sommer steers the humanities back to engagement with the world. The reformist projects that focus her attention develop momentum and meaning as they circulate through society to inspire faith in the possible. Among the cases that she covers are top-down initiatives of political leaders, such as those launched by Antanas Mockus, former mayor of Bogotá, Colombia, and also bottom-up movements like the Theatre of the Oppressed created by the Brazilian director, writer, and educator Augusto Boal. Alleging that we are all cultural agents, Sommer also takes herself to task and creates Pre-Texts, an international arts-literacy...
