Tools for Drought Mitigation in Mediterranean Regions

Significant vulnerability of water systems to drought is a common issue of water resources management in Mediterranean regions. This is due both to the increasing occurrence and severity of drought events and to the growing demand for municipal, tourist, and agricultural uses. The INCO-DC project entitled "A Decision Support System for Mitigation of Drought Impacts in the Mediterranean Regions" (DSS DROUGHT) addresses this issue, contributing to an improved management of water supply systems for irrigation, which represents the most consumptive sector of water resources uses in the Mediterranean region. In order to develop a comprehensive approach toward improved operation of irrigation syst...

Landscape, Memory, and Post-Violence in Cambodia

Between 1975 and 1979 the Khmer Rouge regime in Cambodia enacted a program of organized mass violence that resulted in the deaths of approximately one quarter of the country’s population. Over two million people died from torture, execution, disease and famine. From the commodification of the ‘killing fields’ of Choeung Ek to the hundreds of unmarked mass graves scattered across the country, violence continues to shape the Cambodian landscape. Landscape, Memory, and Post-Violence in Cambodia explores the on-going memorialization of violence. As part of a broader engagement with war, violence and critical heritage studies, it explores how a legacy of organized mass violence becomes part...

Design of Adhesive Joints Under Humid Conditions

This book describes most recent advances and limitations concerning design of adhesive joints under humid conditions and discusses future trends. It presents new approaches to predict the failure load after exposure to load, temperature and humidity over a long period of time. With the rapid increase in numerical computing power there have been attempts to formalize the different environmental contributions in order to provide a procedure to predict assembly durability, based on an initial identification of diffusion coefficients and mechanical parameters for both the adhesive and the interface. A coupled numerical model for the joint of interest is then constructed and this allows local water content to be defined and resulting changes in adhesive and interface properties to be predicted.

Scalar Damage and Healing Mechanics outlines the latest cutting-edge research in the field of scalar damage and healing mechanics, providing step-by-step insight on how to use scalar damage variables in various modeling scenarios. Additionally, the book discusses the latest advances in healing mechanics, covering the evolution of healing and damage, small damage and small healing, healing processes in series and in parallel, super healing, and the thermodynamics of damage and healing. Coupled systems, in which damage triggers self-healing as well as a decoupled system where healing occurs after damage is identified by external detection, are also discussed. Readers are additionally introduce...
