The Environmental Legacy of Military Operations
U.S. military lands are part of the public trust and the level of awareness of sustainability and land-use issues has risen significantly in recent years. Ehlen (U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center) and Harmon (U.S. Army Research Office) present 14 articles that look at the use of engineering geology principles and their applications to both military operations and environmental issues, although military operations and the environment are not always treated together. Topics include battlefield terrain evaluation, predicting fracture systems in enemy underground facilities, the geoenvironmental legacy of the Rock of Gibraltar military engineering, and erosion trends at Fort Leonard Wood. Field Trips in the Southern Rocky Mountains, USA
The theme of the 2004 GSA Annual Meeting and Exposition, “Geoscience in a Changing World,” covers both new and traditional areas of the earth sciences. The Front Range of the Rocky Mountains and the High Plains preserve an outstanding record of geological processes from Precambrian through Quaternary times, and thus serve as excellent educational exhibits for the meeting. With energy and mineral resources, geological hazards, water issues, geoarchaeological sites, and famous dinosaur fossil sites, the Front Range and adjacent High Plains region provide ample opportunities for field trips focusing on our changing world. The chapters in this field guide all contain technical content as well as a field trip log describing field trip routes and stops. Of the 25 field trips offered at the Meeting, 14 are described in this guidebook, covering a wide variety of geoscience disciplines, with chapters on tectonics (Precambrian and Laramide), stratigraphy and paleoenvironments (e.g., early Paleozoic environments, Jurassic eolian environments, the K-T boundary, the famous Oligocene Florissant fossil beds), economic deposits (coal and molybdenum), geological hazards, and geoarchaeology.
Evolution of an Andean Margin
"The objective of this volume is to examine the Cenozoic tectonic and magmatic evolution from the arc to the retroarc of a distinctive end-member of the Andean accretionary orogen between 35*S and 39*S. The evolution of the Andes in this region provides an outstanding case study of an orogen where periods of contraction and extension, crustal shortening and normal faulting, and differences in retroarc volcanism reflect a tectonic regime that alternates in space and time. Structural, magmatic, and paleogeographic patterns correlate strongly with the dynamics of the subduction zone. The region includes the Neuquen basin which is one of the most prolific of the Central Andes. The tectonic setting is important in understanding hydrocarbon systems of the sub-Andean basin and the potential for ore deposits in the cordillera. The Pennsylvanian-early Permian Bird Spring Carbonate Shelf, Southeastern California
"The Bird Spring Shelf in southeastern California, along with coeval turbidite basins to the west, records a complex history of Pennsylvanian and Early Permian sedimentation, sea-level changes, and deformation along this part of the western North American continental margin. In this work we describe and figure the fusulinids, including several new species, and establish detailed correlations between deposits of the shelf and the flanking basins. We then use these correlations to reconstruct the depositional history, paleogeography, and deformational history of the region. This work adds significant detail to existing interpretations of the late Paleozoic as a time of major tectonic instability on the continental margin of southeastern California as it changed from a relatively passive margin, which had persisted through most of the Paleozoic, to an active convergent margin that would characterize the Mesozoic."--Publisher's website.
