In Situ-produced Cosmogenic Nuclides and Quantification of Geological Processes

"In situ-produced cosmogenic nuclides can provide chronologies of environmental change over the past few thousand to several millions of years and may be used to quantify a wide range of weathering and sediment transport processes. These nuclides are thus now used across a broad spectrum of earth science disciplines, including paleoclimatology, geomorphology, and active tectonics. This book is organized around sections that focus on specific aspects of the utilization of cosmogenic nuclides in earth sciences: (1) development of new methods for application of in situ-produced cosmogenic nuclides (burial dating methods, extending their utilization to carbonate-rich and mafic environments); (2) glacial geology (Laurentide Ice Sheet, northern Alps); (3) active tectonics, focusing on applications to constrain slip rates of active faults in Asia (Tibet and Mongolian Gobi-Altay); and (4) landscape development (quantifying sediment production or erosion rates and processes and application of exposure dating to landslides in Hong Kong)."--Publisher's website.

The Mid-Atlantic Piedmont

Not until recently has the mid-Atlantic Piedmont region of the Appalachians been viewed from plate tectonic theory. Eight papers derived from 1995 and 1997 symposia of the Northeastern section of the Geological Society of America help fill in this gap. With chapters arranged by geographic location f

Accommodation zones and transfer zones; the regional segmentation of the Basin and Range Province

This volume focuses on the geometry, kinematic development, and origin of regional segmentation structures within the basin and range province of Western North America. Contributions range from analysis of individiual structures to broad regional syntheses, including a map of basin and range structures and tilt domains. Several papers discuss the implications of regional segmentation structures in assessing seismic hazards, hydrocarbon and mineral resources, and ground-water supplies.

Temper Sands in Prehistoric Oceanian Pottery

"Oceanian ceramic cultures making earthenware pottery spread during the past 3500 years through a dozen major island groups spanning 6000 km of the tropical Pacific Ocean from western Micronesia to western Polynesia. Island potters mixed sand as temper into clay bodies during ceramic manufacture. The nature of island sands is governed by the geotectonics of hotspot chains, island arcs, subduction zones, backarc basins, and remnant arcs as well as by sedimentology. Because small islands with bedrock exposures of restricted character are virtual point sources of sand, many tempers are diagnostic of specific islands. Petrographic study of temper sands in thin section allows distinction between indigenous pottery and exotic pottery transported from elsewhere. Study of 2223 prehistoric Oceanian potsherds from 130 islands and island clusters indicates the nature of Oceanian temper types and documents 105 cases of interisland transport of ceramics over distances typically

Geology of Coal Fires

Naturally burning coal fires and those ignited by human activities receive little attention from the media compared to other environmental hazards, but their study is gaining ground. Here, the world's leading experts present their research findings covering topics such as the gases generated in underground coal fires, the origin of gas-vent minerals and land-cover changes due to coal fires.

Continental Intraplate Earthquakes

"This volume brings together a sampling of research addressing issues of continental intraplate earthquakes, including a core of papers from special sessions held at the spring 2004 Joint Assembly of the American and Canadian Geophysical Unions in Montreal. Papers address the broad related topics of the science, hazard, and policy issues of large continental intraplate earthquakes in a worldwide context. One group of papers addresses aspects of the primary scientific issue--where are these earthquakes and what causes them? Answering this question is crucial to determining whether they will continue there or migrate elsewhere. A second group of papers addresses the challenge of assessing the ...

It took a Coronavirus to teach us the fundamental truth: Life is not a linear motion; rather it is a random motion. Just one shove from Almighty and the entire scenario undergoes a cataclysmic change. This philosophy reverberates through the protagonists of the novel – Kriti and Gautam, who belong to the elite Civil Services of India. Kriti goes to London on an official visit and contracts Covid-19. She undergoes Near-Death-Experience in a London hospital. Her husband Gautam is obligated to rush to London to be by her side in this hour of crisis. But, can he? Welcome to the world rampaged by Coronavirus, where mankind is living under the shadow of death, destruction and devastation. The author invites you to join the journey from despair to hope. Just hop on.
