Summarizes progress achieved by participants of the Accelerated Reduction/Elimination of Toxics (ARET) Program, which seeks to reduce the adverse impact of toxic substances on human health as fast as possible through the accelerated reduction or elimination of emissions-selected toxic substances. There are 117 substances on the ARET list, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, pentachlorophenol, polychlorinated biphenyls, dioxins, furans, cadmium, cyanides, benzene, and hydrogen sulphide. ARET participants include both government and industrial organizations. Achievements are summarized for 1996, including reductions by substance category and by industrial sector. Appendices include data on emissions by ARET participant facility and by substance, with comparisons to results of previous years, as well as a directory of ARET participants.
