"Four Sketchbooks"

Founder of Superstudio and initiator of the so-called 'Radical Architecture' movement (one of the most important avant-garde movements of the sixties and seventies), Adolfo Natalini describes years of designed and constructed architectural projects through his preferred media: drawings and sketches shown in his Black notebooks (Quaderni Neri). This book contains many of his numerous designs and constructed projects, witness to almost fifty years of his career, collected in four new Notebooks. The first section describes the experiences shaping Natalini's education, including his studies and work at Superstudio and the 'Pistioia school'. The other chapters present his designs and completed pr...

The Society of Interiors

The Society of Interiors discusses a variety of spatial practices which critique, reveal, and resist the economical logic of a neo-liberal market. A market that caters for exclusiveness and individualities, where public space becomes an interior, that is highly controlled and privatized. The different essays unpack, develop and expand a diversity of interior and spatial practices in urban contexts that allow for a diverse public, express differences, and create other experiences and situations. Authors include the architect and researcher Tatjana Schneider, editor of the publication Spatial Agency (Routledge 2011); the activist architect Petra Pferdmenges from alive architecture in Brussels, the architectural theorist Peter Lang; the architect and artist Tor Lindstrand; as well as Rochus Hinkel, whose research focuses on the intersections between interior, architecture and urban environments.

Opening Lines: Sketchbooks of Ten Modern Architects', an exhibition drawn from the Drawing Matter collection, with additional loans from selected architects, is dedicated to architectural sketchbooks in practice and on display.0The exhibition presents a variety of sketchbook and sketch practices by architects whose built work has been largely formed through drawing by hand on paper. In parallel, it explores the parameters of displaying sketchbooks, considering how an object designed to be held and leafed through can be presented within the requirements of a museum setting. The project therefore considers the content and materiality of sketchbooks both within an architect?s oeuvre, and in the context of institutional display.00Exhibition: Tchoban Foundation, Berlin, Germany (30.06. - 07.10.2018).

The Museum

This book is the first part of a three-volume field guide to the future of architecture. The collection maps contemporary architectural practice and urban planning, presented through the words and ideas of some of its key players and change-makers. From institutions, activists, thinkers, curators and architects to urban bloggers, polemicists, critics and publishers, Archifutures presents the people shaping tomorrow’s architecture and cities – and thereby helping to shape our societies of the future as well. Steering the dialogue on the contemporary role of these institutional bodies are current practitioners and thinkersin the architecture and design field. Designed by Diana Portela with Janar Siniloo and Lena Giovanazzi.

Architecture of the Everyday

Architecture of the Everyday

Ordinary. Banal. Quotidian. These words are rarely used to praise architecture, but in fact they represent the interest of a growing number of architects looking to the everyday to escape the ever-quickening cycles of consumption and fashion that have reduced architecture to a series of stylistic fads. Architecture of the Everyday makes a plea for an architecture that is emphatically un-monumental, anti-heroic, and unconcerned with formal extravagance. Edited by Deborah Berke and Steven Harris, this collection of writings, photo-essays, and projects describes an architecture that draws strength from its simplicity, use of common materials, and relationship to other fields of study. Topics ra...

The Planning Moment

Empires and their aftermaths were massive planning institutions; in the past two hundred years, the natural and social sciences emerged—at least in part—as modes of knowledge production for imperial planning. Yet these connections are frequently under-emphasized in the history of science and its corollary fields. The Planning Moment explores the myriad ways plans and planning practices pervade recent global history. The book is built around twenty-seven brief case studies that explore the centrality of planning in colonial and postcolonial environments, relationships, and contexts, through a range of disciplines: the history of science, science and technology studies, colonial and postco...
