The Vitreous and Vitreoretinal Interface
Ophthalmic researchers and clinicians alike increasingly are recognizing the importance of the vitreous body in the physiology, biochemistry, and pathology of the inner eye. The Vitreous and Vitreoretinal Interface, with contributions by vitreoretinal surgeons and laboratory eye researchers, presents the most up-to-date clinically relevant data. This book provides evidence of the vitreous body's significant role in preserving retinal homeostasis, as well as the close connection between vitreous traction and such conditions as retinal inflammation, retinal vascular occlusions, macular edema, proliferative diabetic retinopathy, and giant retinal tears. The particular vitreal changes that occur in aphakia, myopia, retinitis pigmentosa, and idiopathic giant retinal breaks, as well as recent advances in open-sky vitreous surgery and in the search for useful vitreous substitutes are discussed.
Microcirculation
The recogmuon recogmtIon of the microcirculation as an ideal interdisciplinary meeting place for the life sciences is really a postwar phenomenon. The European and the American Societies more than any other organizations launched the idea, and the success of the European Society's International Meetings gave impetus to a growth of interest from a handful of specialists to the wide interdisciplinary study which microcirculation now represents. The meeting held in Canada in June 1975 was, however, the first truly international meeting devoted to the microcirculation. Clinical Light Damage to the Eye
To my mind, the superoxide radical discovered by Linus Pauling more than 50 years ago is about to become a major issue in Ameri can medicine. Uncannily, Pauling's early focus on vitamin C has pointed the way to the whole catalogue of free-radical scavengers, which we in medicine will be using in the coming decade. In ophthalmology, the basic scientists have been talking about the role of free-radical induction by light for some time. They have accumulated an increasing amount of evidence supporting the idea that prolonged light exposure contributes to cataract development and retinal degeneration. Through Clinical Light Damage to the Eye, we hope to bring this message to the practicing ophthalmolo gist. Because Dr. Pauling's work bears so strongly on the key issue of free-radical damage, and because of my own great respect for him as a scientist and a man of rare courage, I invited Dr. Pauling to write the foreword to Clinical Light Damage to the Eye, which follows.
