The Secret History of Costaguana

London, 1903. Joseph Conrad is struggling with his new novel ('I am placing it in South America in a Republic I call Costaguana'). Progress is slow and the great writer needs help from a native of the Caribbean coast of South America. José Altamirano, Colombian at birth, who has just arrived in London, answers the great writer's advertisement and tells him his life story. José has been witness to the most horrible things that a person or a country could suffer, and drags with him not just a guilty conscience but a story that has almost destroyed him.But when Nostromo is published the following year José is outraged by what he reads: 'You've eliminated me from my own life. You, Joseph Conr...

The Birth of Modern Mexico, 1780-1824

The Birth of Modern Mexico, 1780-1824 investigates the roots of the Mexican Independence era from a variety of perspectives. The essays in this volume link the pre-1810 late Bourbon period to the War of Independence (1810-1821), analyze many crucial aspects of the decade of conflict, and illustrate the continuities with the first years of the independent Mexican nation. They all contribute to a nuanced view of the period: the different conceptions of legitimacy between the popular masses and the elite, the skill and importance of pro-Spanish propaganda, the process of organizing conspiracies, the survival and thriving of a mercantile family, the causes of failing mines, the role of religious thought in the supposed secular state, and differing conceptions of authority by the legislature and the executive. One of the few readable, concise books on the topic of independence, this volume probes the birth of modern Mexico in a crisply written style that is sure to appeal to historians and students of Mexican history.

In today’s “flatter” world, the most serious criminal activity affecting the United States is increasingly transnational, thereby requiring the active assistance of other countries to combat it. The United States only relatively recently has dealt with this problem by entering into a growing number of bilateral and multilateral treaties, agreements, and formal and informal law enforcement arrangements. This treatise, designed for prosecutors, defense attorneys, judges and academics, is written by the former Department of Justice official responsible for supervising the implementation and design of United States treaties and statutes as it began to cope with this explosion of transnational criminal activity. It describes and analyzes in detail the legal aspects of, and operation under, these treaties, statutes, and other measures. Additional titles by Michael Abbell include: • International Prisoner Transfer 2010 • Extradition to and from the United States 2010 This is the final Edition, there will be no further updates for this series.

Hispanic New York

Over the past few decades, a wave of immigration has turned New York into a microcosm of the Americas and enhanced its role as the crossroads of the English- and Spanish-speaking worlds. Yet far from being an alien group within a "mainstream" and supposedly pure "Anglo" America, people referred to as Hispanics or Latinos have been part and parcel of New York since the beginning of the city's history. They represent what Walt Whitman once celebrated as "the Spanish element of our nationality." Hispanic New York is the first anthology to offer a comprehensive view of this multifaceted heritage. Combining familiar materials with other selections that are either out of print or not easily access...

The book and map document the results of an early topographical survey of the Madeira River rapids for the prospective railroad that would connect Bolivia with the Atlantic Ocean. ‡b According to Wikipedia, the survey was conducted by José Agustín Palacios in 1844-1847 when he served as a General Administrator of Taxes in the province of Moxos. In 1846, Palacios convinced Bolivian authorities that the best way to secure access to the Atlantic was through the Amazon. At the time, Bolivia had access to the Pacific Ocean (subsequently lost to Chile in the War of the Pacific in 1884), but the lucrative trade routes with the United States and Europe were located in the Atlantic. In 1851, the ...
