The book examines the postcolonial Muslim political discourse through monuments. It establishes a link between the process by which historic buildings become monuments and the gradual transformation of these historic/legal entities into political objects. The author studies the multiple interpretations of Indo-Islamic historical buildings as ‘political sites’ as well as emerging Muslim religiosities and the internal configurations of Muslim politics in India. He also looks at the modes by which a memory of a royal Muslim past is articulated for political mobilisation. Raising critical questions such as whether Muslim responses to political questions are homogenous, the book will greatly interest researchers and students of political science, modern Indian history, sociology, as well as the general reader interested in contemporary India.

The pioneering and hugely influential work of Mikhail Bakhtin has led scholars in recent decades to see all discourse and social life as inherently "dialogical." No speaker speaks alone, because our words are always partly shaped by our interactions with others, past and future. Moreover, we never fashion ourselves entirely by ourselves, but always do so in concert with others. Bakhtin thus decisively reshaped modern understandings of language and subjectivity. And yet, the contributors to this volume argue that something is potentially overlooked with too close a focus on dialogism: many speakers, especially in charged political and religious contexts, work energetically at crafting monologues, single-voiced statements to which the only expected response is agreement or faithful replication. Drawing on ethnographic case studies from the United States, Iran, Cuba, Indonesia, Algeria, and Papua New Guinea, the authors argue that a focus on "the monologic imagination" gives us new insights into languages' political design and religious force, and deepens our understandings of the necessary interplay between monological and dialogical tendencies.

Hadits adalah sumber ajaran Islam kedua sesudah Al-Qur’an. Karenanya, hadits lantas menjadi Al-masdaru Tasyri’ al-Islamy alTsany (sumber syariat Islam kedua). Terkadang, hadits atau sunnah ini juga disebut sebagai atsar atau akhbar, yang sesungguhnya berfungsi sebagai penjelas isi Al-Qur’an. Ketika membagi ilmu-ilmu keislaman yang sudah matang, Imam Badruddin Az-Zarkasyi (1334-1391) mengatakan bahwa hadits sebagai sumber penting ajaran Islam dikategorikan sebagai ilmu yang sudah matang karena sudah “terbakar” (nadhaja waqad ikhtaraqa). Sudah “terbakar” berarti sudah banyak didiskusikan oleh para ulama mutaqaddimin (terdahulu) yang otoritatif—karena sudah memiliki kaidah-kaidah dan metodologi yang teruji dan telah disepakati. Selain hadits, ilmu bahasa (nahwu dan shorof) serta iqih dan ushul iqih juga termasuk dalam kategori sudah “terbakar”.
