Forest Ecosystems and Environments
Coastal East and Southeast Asia are characterized by wet growing seasons, and species-rich forest ecosystems develop throughout the latitudinal and altitudinal gradients. In this region, the Global Change Impacts on Terrestrial Ecosystems in Monsoon Asia (TEMA) project was carried out as a unique contribution to the international project Global Change and Terrestrial Ecosystems. TEMA aimed to integrate forest ecosystem processes, from leaf physiology to meteorological budget and prediction of long-term change of vegetation composition and architecture through demographic processes. Special attention was given to watershed processes, where forest ecosystem metabolism affects the properties and biogeochemical budgets of freshwater ecosystems, and where rivers, wetlands, and lakes are subject to direct and indirect effects of environmental change. This volume presents the scaling-up concept for better understanding of ecosystem functioning.
Integrative Observations and Assessments
This volume focuses on new trends in monitoring biodiversity in the Asia-Pacific region, one of the most rapidly changing areas in the world. It provides reviews of the challenges in studying the spatial variability of biodiversity across various ecosystems. This book also describes newly developed concepts and methods for biodiversity observation including ubiquitous genotyping, systematic conservation, monitoring of the functions and services of ecosystems and biodiversity informatics. These contributions will lead to establishing integrative observations and assessments of biodiversity, essential for reporting the current status and for the effective conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. This work will interest biodiversity researchers not only in the Asia-Pacific region but also across the entire globe.
Operation Firestorm
General Douglas MacArthur, during the Korean War, ordered two small atomic bombs to be hidden in a small island near South Korea “just in case.” Things get out of hand. They didn’t and were never activated. Now that the war has ended, the US military is unable to find the two bombs. They are gone! Two Japanese businessmen form an alliance to eventually blackmail the USA with only the threat of detonation. One man is seeking vengeance for his parents dying in a Japanese internment camp; the other’s parents perished at Hiroshima. Rolf Reiter, who saved the day during Chameleon Bravo, is called out of retirement to find the bombs. The Russians become involved because the two evil businessmen are considering threatening Russia as well after the Americans. One businessman isn’t aware that the other is actually going to detonate one bomb in a large American city even if blackmail money is paid. He is in a hurry, and Rolf Reiter is plagued by traitors from the highest level in the American military and intelligence networks. The character and the plot twist and turn as the bombs are relocated and armed to annihilate a metropolitan destination.
