In Knowledge, Curriculum, and Preparation for Work, the editors offer a timely collection of chapters approaching debates on economic and social change and employment within different types of economies. Considering questions of knowledge and curriculum, these works interrogate ways of thinking about relationships between different forms of work and education. The focus is both on the curriculum – the ways in which different types of knowledge affect the quality and organization of curricula that are intended to prepare for work – and the factors influencing and constraining what education can do to prepare for work, as well as how these factors shape and limit the role of educational preparation for work.

People loved their trams, they took them to school, to work, to go shopping, to the cinema and to football matches. When the last Glasgow tram ran in 1962, a quarter of a million Glaswegians braved the pouring rain to say goodbye. Thirty years later, trams were re-invented to help combat congestion and environmental impacts of the car. Both eras are covered in this book by an engineer who witnessed the demise of the tram and its revival, playing a major role in getting trams onto the streets of Manchester in 1992. Now trams are running again in London, Edinburgh and cities in between. Advancing Theory and Research in Widening Participation
Issues of access, social exclusion and widening participation dominate educational policy agendas and are a shared global challenge. Participation in higher education and adult lifelong learning activities can be a life-changing experience that opens up new opportunities. However, access remains unequal. People from lower socio-economic backgrounds, those living in the most deprived areas and people from minority ethnic groups are underrepresented. In this book, we focus on how we can move the field of widening participation forward, paying specific attention to the theories and methods we can use to better understand and tackle the problem of underrepresented groups in post-compulsory education, and how individuals and institutions can be supported. We argue that in order to make sense of these issues, it is important to engage in both the findings of widening participation research and the theoretical foundations which underpin them. This way, alternative perspectives on the widening participation agenda and emerging research and policy can be explored from alternative perspectives. This book was originally published as a special issue of Studies in Continuing Education.
The Seelys of New Brunswick
Robert Seeley (1602-1667) was born in the County of Huntingdon, England, son of William Seeley and Grace Prett. He married Mary Mason and they came to America in 1630 where they lived in Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Long Island. Descendants lived in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Brunswick, Ontario, Australia, Utah, California, and elsewhere. Some descendants came to New Brunswick as Loyalists in 1783. Includes other Seely families from Ireland and England.
