Collours

"The nature of colour should change -no longer just a thin layer of change, but something that genuinely alters perception" -this stipulation of Rem Koolhaas is echoes by the world famous architects and designers Alessandro Mendini and Norman Foster. In this volume, they present between them a total of 90 colours -each covering half a page -accompanied by comments on the background, the significance and the applications of the colours. Studies of colours from each office form the basis of this book, and were previously only available in extravagant individual editions. With this comprehensive and consistent presentation of the varying approaches to colour, we have a compendium which shows the wide use of colour in today's technologically advanced architecture with its modern, post-modern and deconstructive orientation. The range of examples of the colours in practice includes load-bearing structures, facades, interior design, furnishing and the entire specturm of product design.

"The following pages comprise a sourcebook of over 1000 designs since the turn of the century. It is intended as a tool not only for the consumer, but also for those seeking inspiration in their own design work. Each object is presented with a caption providing full technical details, as well as the websites of the manufacturers, or designers where relevant. Commentaries throughout shed light on the work of personalities and on trends, making the book more than just a catalogue of desirable objects."--BOOK JACKET.

Design Discourse

  • Categories: Art

The editor has gathered together a body of writing in the emerging field of design studies. The contributors argue in different ways for a rethinking of design in the light of its cultural significance and its powerful position in today's society. The collection begins with a discussion of the various expressions of opposition to the modernists' purist approach toward design. Drawing on postmodernist theory and other critical strategies, the writers examine the relations among design, technology, and social organization to show how design has become a complex and multidisciplinary activity. The second section provides examples of new methods of interpreting and analysing design, ranging from rhetoric and semiotics to phenomenology, demonstrating how meaning is created visually. A final section related to design history shifts its emphasis to ideological frameworks such as capitalism and patriarchy that establish boundaries for the production and use of design.

World as Design

Otl Aicher's writings are explorations of that world. They are a substantive part of his work. In moving through the history of thought and design, building and construction he assures the possibilities of arranging existence in a humane fashion. As ever he is concerned with the question of the conditions needed to produce a civilization culture. These conditions have to be fought for against apparent factual or material constraints and spiritual and intellectual substitute offers. Otl Aicher has a taste for dispute. For this reason this volume contains polemical statements on cultural and political subjects as well as practical reports and historical exposition. Aicher fights with productive obstinacy above all for the renewal of Modernism, which he says has largely exhausted itself in aesthetic visions. He insists that the ordinary working day is still more important than "cultural sunday." Wolfgang Jean Stock
