ATEE Spring Conference 2020-2021
This book collects some of the works presented at ATEE Florence Spring Conference 2020-2021. The Conference, originally planned for May 2020, was forcefully postponed due to the dramatic insurgence of the pandemic. Despite the difficulties in this period, the Organising Committee decided anyway to keep it, although online and more than one year later, not to disperse the huge work of authors, mainly teachers, who had to face one of the hardest challenges in the last decades, in a historic period where the promotion of social justice and equal opportunities – through digital technologies and beyond – is a key factor for democratic citizenship in our societies. The Organising Committee, the University of Florence, and ATEE wish to warmly thank all the authors for their commitment and understanding, which ensured the success of the Conference. We hope this book could be, not only a witness of these pandemic times, but a hopeful sign for an equal and inclusive education in all countries.
Activating and Engaging Learners and Teachers
This book offers a nuanced, integrated understanding of EFL learning and instruction and investigates both learner and teacher perspectives on four thematically interconnected parts. Part I encompasses chapters on psychological aspects related to teaching and learning and presents the latest research on positive language education, teacher empathy, and well-being. Part II deals with EFL teaching methodology, specifically related to teaching pronunciation, language assessment, peer response, and strategy instruction. Part III addresses aspects of cultural learning including inter- and transculturality, digital citizenship, global learning, and cosmopolitanism. Part IV concerns teaching with literary texts, for instance, to reflect on social and political discourse, facilitate empowerment, imagine utopian or dystopian futures, and to bring non-Western narratives into language classrooms.

Ungewissheit als Erfahrung in der Demokratie
Der von Russland begonnene Krieg in Europa, die Covid-Pandemie und die Klimaentwicklung markieren exemplarisch Themenfelder von Ungewissheit. Sie sind Herausforderungen für die politische Gestaltung in der Demokratie, aber auch für das Lernen in der Schule. Ungewissheit ist damit mehr denn je eine pädagogische Grunderfahrung und gleichzeitig Metapher für zu bewältigende Aufgaben. Schule und Demokratiepädagogik können mit den Kindern und Jugendlichen Korridore resilienzstärkender Zukunftsperspektiven entwickeln.
