Heligoland, Past and Present
Heligoland (spelled “Helgoland†in German) consists of two small German islands in the southeast of the North Sea, some 50 kilometres from the German mainland. The main – and the only inhabited - island has a length of less than two kilometres but it is one of the top-tourist destinations of northwest Germany. This book contains the first comprehensive history of Heligoland in the English language, including: its unique geology (with its cliffs and fossils); its seals, birds and plants; its legends of saints and pirates; its wreckers, fishermen, hunters and pilots; its turbulent military history, from the Middle Ages to the Nazis; accounts of eyewitnesses from various centuries; many line drawings, some historic ones and some made by the Dutch artist Anneke de Vries.
A Dutch Castaway on Ascension Island in 1725
On 5 May 1725 a Dutch ship's officer, Leendert Hasenbosch, was set ashore on the desert island of Ascension in the South Atlantic Ocean, as a punishment for sodomy. He tried to survive on turtles and birds but found very little water on the barren island. He wrote a diary. He probably died after about half a year. In January 1726 British mariners found his tent, diary and other things and brought the diary to England. In 1726 a first English version of the diary of the Dutch castaway was published. Other versions followed in 1728, 1730 and 1976. Who was the castaway? The truth was disclosed by the Dutch historian Michiel Koolbergen (1953-2002), in a posthumously published book in Dutch. With the support of Michiel Koolbergen's family and publisher, this new book discloses the truth in English. This book is the second edition, with some improvements compared to the original edition of 2006. This book is illustrated with line drawings, both historic ones and by the Dutch artist Anneke de Vries.
The Selvagens, Forgotten Atlantic Islands
Between the Canary and Madeira Islands, we find the tiny, barren and uninhabited Selvagens. Far from the tourist crowds, these volcanic outcrops house fantastic seabird colonies and unique species of flora and fauna. The Selvagens were colonized by Portugal in 1438. Being virtually destitute of water, they have only had temporary inhabitants like fishermen, bird hunters and scientists. Many stories have been told about buried pirate treasures; we do not know whether those treasures ever existed but this book reveals some spectacular stories of genuine treasure hunts. Pirates and Privateers from the Low Countries, C.1500-C.1810
In novels, cartoons and films, "the" pirate had a wooden leg, a parrot on one of his shoulders, a patch before one of his eyes and buried his treasures on remote shores or islands... This book is not about fictional pirates but about real ones but their stories are equally spectacular.
