Disinfection Efficiency and Dose Measurement of Polychromatic UV Light

There is currently intense interest in the use of ultraviolet technology for helping to meet future regulations relating to improved microbial inactivation and decreased disinfection byproducts (DBPs). Much of this interest has been fueled by recent research indicating the effectiveness of UV technologies for the inactivation of Cryptosporidium. This scientific discovery, combined with proposed regulations concerning DBPs in the United States, has resulted in a need to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of UV irradiation for use as a disinfectant for drinking water. The objectives of this project were to:(1) develop and evaluate physical, chemical, and biological methods for calculati...

In the relatively short period since Cryptosporidium was recognised as a human pathogen, and that it could be transmitted in water as well as directly between animals and people, it has been the subject of intense investigations. Its status as an opportunistic pathogen, especially in AIDS patients, and the lack of effective anti-cryptosporidial drugs have served to emphasise the public health importance of this organism. This has to some extent overshadowed the fact that Cryptosporidium is also an important pathogen of domestic animals and wildlife. In recent years, the application of molecular biology and culture techniques have had an enormous impact on our understanding of the aetiologica...

Inactivation of Pathogens with Innovative UV Technologies

This research studied low pressure(LP), low pressure-high-output (LPHO, medium pressure(MP) and pulsed (PUV) UV Systems and their effects on various pathogens. Among the findings were: bacteria is more susceptible to UV light than viruses; some strains of E.coli had different dose responses without explanation; adenovirus serotypes 40 and 41 are highly resistant to UV inactivation and a residual disinfection process is recommended to follow UV disinfection. All details of the study and models are discussed thoroughly.

This compendium represents the first peer-reviewed book of its kind published by AWWA's Membrane Processes Committee (MPC). This book represents the best membrane-related papers from 2004 AWWA Annual Conference, 2004 Water Quality Technology Conference, and 2005 Membrane Technology Conference, which were all peer reviewed and author updated. Sections cover Section removal efficiencies, membrane performance, pretreatment strategies, regulatory issues, filtration guidance, studies on operations and integrated membrane systems, MBR (membrane bioreactors), and reuse issues.

Handbook of Mental Health and Aging

The Handbook of Mental Health and Aging, Third Edition provides a foundational background for practitioners and researchers to understand mental health care in older adults as presented by leading experts in the field. Wherever possible, chapters integrate research into clinical practice. The book opens with conceptual factors, such as the epidemiology of mental health disorders in aging and cultural factors that impact mental health. The book transitions into neurobiological-based topics such as biomarkers, age-related structural changes in the brain, and current models of accelerated aging in mental health. Clinical topics include dementia, neuropsychology, psychotherapy, psychopharmacolog...

Personalized Hip and Knee Joint Replacement

This open access book describes and illustrates the surgical techniques, implants, and technologies used for the purpose of personalized implantation of hip and knee components. This new and flourishing treatment philosophy offers important benefits over conventional systematic techniques, including component positioning appropriate to individual anatomy, improved surgical reproducibility and prosthetic performance, and a reduction in complications. The techniques described in the book aim to reproduce patients’ native anatomy and physiological joint laxity, thereby improving the prosthetic hip/knee kinematics and functional outcomes in the quest of the forgotten joint. They include kinema...

This practically oriented book provides an up-to-date overview of all significant aspects of the pathogenesis of sepsis and its management, including within the intensive care unit. Readers will find information on the involvement of the coagulation and endocrine systems during sepsis and on the use of biomarkers to diagnose sepsis and allow early intervention. International clinical practice guidelines for the management of sepsis are presented, and individual chapters focus on aspects such as fluid resuscitation, vasopressor therapy, response to multiorgan failure, antimicrobial therapy, and adjunctive immunotherapy. The closing section looks forward to the coming decade, discussing novel trial designs, sepsis in low- and middle-income countries, and emerging management approaches. The book is internatio nal in scope, with contributions from leading experts worldwide. It will be of value to residents and professionals/practitioners in the fields of infectious diseases and internal medicine, as well as to GPs and medical students.
