Fate and Persistence of Pathogens Subjected to Disinfection

Disinfection of wastewater is a necessary treatment process for protecting the public from potential exposure to pathogenic microorganisms because many wastewater effluents are discharged into water bodies that may be used for recreation or as future drinking water supplies. Two common forms of disinfection are chlorine and ultraviolet (UV) light. However, microorganisms differ in their susceptibility to UV and chlorine disinfectants. It is necessary to understand how different classes of pathogens respond to UV and chlorine disinfection processes in wastewater to better develop strategies for optimizing the treatment of pathogens in wastewater. It is also recognized that water quality may i...

Disinfection Efficiency and Dose Measurement of Polychromatic UV Light

There is currently intense interest in the use of ultraviolet technology for helping to meet future regulations relating to improved microbial inactivation and decreased disinfection byproducts (DBPs). Much of this interest has been fueled by recent research indicating the effectiveness of UV technologies for the inactivation of Cryptosporidium. This scientific discovery, combined with proposed regulations concerning DBPs in the United States, has resulted in a need to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of UV irradiation for use as a disinfectant for drinking water. The objectives of this project were to:(1) develop and evaluate physical, chemical, and biological methods for calculati...

Wastewater Treatment: Recycling, Management, and Valorization of Industrial Solid Wastes bridges the gap between the theory and applications of wastewater treatments, principles of diffusion, and the mechanism of biological and industrial treatment processes. It presents the practical applications that illustrate the treatment of several types of data, providing an overview of the characterization and treatment of wastewaters, and then examining the different biomaterials and methods for the evaluation of the treatment of biological wastewaters. Further, it considers the various types of industrial wastewater treatment, separation, and characterization of industrial wastewater. The book serves as a valuable resource for practicing engineers and students who are interested in the field of wastewater treatment. Features: Presents the latest technologies in water treatment, including nanomaterials for industrial wastewater Covers different treatments for various industrial wastewaters, including chemical and pharmaceutical waste Includes forward-thinking analysis including conclusions and recommendations for water reuse programs

This technical brief provides information to inform Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) and wastewater elements within multi-sectoral antimicrobial resistance (AMR) national action plans (NAPs). It includes a summary of evidence and the co-benefits rationale for action in each sector and presents a menu of actions for consideration and refinement in each country context. The technical brief also identifies sector specific policy options and to additional information, including knowledge gaps and research needs, as well as additional technical resources to support planning and implementation.

Fluence Monitoring in UV Disinfection Systems

The research described in this report focused on the photolysis of a chemical substance giving a linear relation between the formation level of the photo product and the applied dose. Objectives were to: develop an online fluence meter based on a Uvsensitive chemical for which the formation level of the photo product has a clear relation with the applied UV dose, and to find naturally occurring substances or chemicals to be dosed that would be sensitive towards UVC light (200-285 nm) and would give accurately measurable photo products in the 0-1,000 J/m2 dose range. Based on an initial study, nitrate as a naturally occurring compound and the ferric ion/ ferrous ion (Fe3+/Fe2+) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)/benzoate systems as chemicals to be dosed were selected for further research.

Frontiers of Engineering

U.S. Frontiers of Engineering (USFOE) symposia bring together 100 outstanding engineers (ages 30 to 45) to exchange information about leading-edge technologies in a range of engineering fields. The 2007 symposium covered engineering trustworthy computer systems, control of protein conformations, biotechnology for fuels and chemicals, modulating and simulating human behavior, and safe water technologies. Papers in this volume describe leading-edge research on disparate tools in software security, decoding the "mechanome," corn-based materials, modeling human cultural behavior, water treatment by UV irradiation, and many other topics. A speech by dinner speaker Dr. Henrique (Rico) Malvar, managing director of Microsoft Research, is also included. Appendixes provide information about contributors, the symposium program, summaries of break-out sessions, and a list of participants. This is the thirteenth volume in the USFOE series.
