Modernism, Technology, and the Body

This book is a study of the relations between the body and its technologies in modernism. Tim Armstrong traces the links between modernist literary texts and medical, psychological and social theory across a range of writers, including Yeats, Henry James, Eliot, Stein, and Pound. Armstrong shows how modernist texts enact experimental procedures which have their origins in nineteenth-century psychophysics, biology, and bodily reform techniques, but within a context in which the body is reconceived and subjected to new modes of production, representation and commodification. Drawing on a wide range of disciplines, Armstrong challenges the received oppositions between technology and literature, the instrumental and the aesthetic, by demonstrating the leaky boundaries and complex interconnections between these domains. This book offers a cultural history of modernism as it negotiated the enduring fact of the human body in a period of rapid technological change.

Microbiology of wetlands

Watersaturated soil and sediment ecosystems (i.e. wetlands) are ecologically as well as economically important systems due to their high productivity, their nutrient (re)cycling capacities and their prominent contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions. Being on the transition between terrestrial and – aquatic ecosystems, wetlands are buffers for terrestrial run off thereby preventing eutrophication of inland as well as coastal waters. The close proximity of oxic-anoxic conditions, often created by wetland plant roots, facilitates the simultaneous activity of aerobic as well as anaerobic microbial communities. Input of nutrients and fast recycling due to active aerobes and anaerobes ma...

Environmental Microbiology

Environmental Microbiology covers cultivation of diverse microbes, physiological ecology and nucleic acid techniques in environmental microbiology. Both applied methods (such as cultivation and preparation) and theoretical modeling (such as bioenergetic calculation programs and imaging) are discussed. A significant number of chapters on methods in activity measurement are included. Environmental Microbiology is volume 397 in the critically acclaimed laboratory standard for more than forty years, Methods in Enzymology. Methods in Enzymology is now available online at ScienceDirect - full-text online of volumes 1 onwards. · Cultivation & Physiological Ecology · Imaging of Cells & Microscale Architecture · Nucleic Acids-based Molecular Ecology

Microbial Sulfur Metabolism

This revealing book details recent developments in the study of the relationship between sulfur and the microbial agents that affect its metabolism. In recent years, new methods have been applied to study the biochemistry and molecular biology of reactions of the global sulfur cycle, the microorganisms involved and their physiology, metabolism and ecology. These activities have uncovered fascinating new insights for the understanding of aerobic and anaerobic sulfur metabolism.
