In 1902, students of William Merritt Chase commissioned John Singer Sargent to paint a portrait of their teacher that they intended to donate to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In the portrait, Chase stares intently at the viewer with a palette and paintbrushes in hand, presumably pausing in the midst of painting to scrutinize his canvas. Despite this pause in his handiwork, his focused facial expression implies that his mind remains active. By depicting Chase engaged in the mental and perceptive work that precedes the physical handling of paint, Sargent asserted the importance of skilled, artistic observation and refuted critics who characterized both Sargent and Chase's work as facile and ...
"To understand the Kentucky Derby is to understand the contemporary American spirit." One hundred and fifty years have passed since the Thoroughbreds of the inaugural Kentucky Derby sprang from the starting gate to race beneath the iconic Twin Spires of Churchill Downs. But the story of the greatest two minutes in sports is more than the pageantry of the horses and thrill of the people who love and celebrate the event. As one of Kentucky's flagship cultural and economic institutions, the Thoroughbred racing industry must constantly reconcile with its past...
This book explores the role which policy networks and particularly advocacy coalitions play in EU energy policy, and the factors that account for their policy success. It captures the often neglected interaction between public and private actors in EU energy security policy and between opposing advocacy coalitions. The volume’s case studies examine coalitions working on two issues central to EU energy policy debates over the last decade: fracking for shale gas and developing the Southern Gas Corridor, a pipeline system linking Europe with the gas region of the Caspian Sea. Although the coalitions studied are focused on impacting EU energy policy, they stretch beyond the EU borders. The book draws on original, rich, and intriguing data, around 90 interviews with energy stakeholders and over six months of fieldwork and participant observation, analysed through an innovative combination of frame analysis and social network analysis.

This book examines the practices enacted by three key institutions of the transatlantic security community-the EU, NATO and the OSCE—in the name of combating international terrorism, and analyzes the ways in which those practices have both been affected by and contributed to changes in the field of security. The book examines the interplay between the two logics and analyzes their implications, including the ways in which practices that instantiate th...
