Based on lectures given at an advanced course on integrable systems at the Centre de Recerca Matemàtica in Barcelona, these lecture notes address three major aspects of integrable systems: obstructions to integrability from differential Galois theory; the description of singularities of integrable systems on the basis of their relation to bi-Hamiltonian systems; and the generalization of integrable systems to the non-Hamiltonian settings. All three sections were written by top experts in their respective fields. Native to actual problem-solving challenges in mechanics, the topic of integrable systems is currently at the crossroads of several disciplines in pure and applied mathematics, and also has important interactions with physics. The study of integrable systems also actively employs methods from differential geometry. Moreover, it is extremely important in symplectic geometry and Hamiltonian dynamics, and has strong correlations with mathematical physics, Lie theory and algebraic geometry (including mirror symmetry). As such, the book will appeal to experts with a wide range of backgrounds.

This book is dedicated to the memory of Mikael Passare, an outstanding Swedish mathematician who devoted his life to developing the theory of analytic functions in several complex variables and exploring geometric ideas first-hand. It includes several papers describing Mikael’s life as well as his contributions to mathematics, written by friends of Mikael’s who share his attitude and passion for science. A major section of the book presents original research articles that further develop Mikael’s ideas and which were written by his former students and co-authors. All these mathematicians work at the interface of analysis and geometry, and Mikael’s impact on their research cannot be underestimated. Most of the contributors were invited speakers at the conference organized at Stockholm University in his honor. From Moscow State University, Bolsinov (computer methods) and Fomenko (differential geometry) present a new approach to the qualitative analysis of the particular type of geodesic flow of Riemannian metrics on manifolds based on the theory of topological classification of integrable Hamiltonian systems. They begin by introducing the qualitative theory of integrable Hamiltonian systems, then discuss the class of integrable geodesic flows on two-dimensional surfaces from both the classical and contemporary perspectives. They classify the flows according to equivalence relations, such as isometry, the Liouville equivalence, the smooth and continuous trajectory equivalence, and the geodesic equivalence. They also explain the new technique that makes such classification possible. Many of their results have not been published before.
