ALI BABA AND THE FORTY THIEVES - A Tale from the Arabian Nights

ISSN: 2397-9607 Issue 225 ΓΏ In this 225th issue of the Baba Indaba?s Children's Stories series, Baba Indaba narrates the Arabian Nights story of ?THE STORY OF ALI BABA AND THE FORTY THIEVES?. ONCE upon a time, long, long ago and far, far away in a town in Persia lived two brothers named Cassim and Ali Baba, between whom their father at his death had left what little property he possessed equally divided. "Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves" is a folk tale from One Thousand and One Nights. It was included in the collection in the 18th century by its French translator Antoine Galland. The latter reported he heard those stories from Syrian storyteller Hanna Diyab. According to the plot, Ali Baba is a poor woodcutter who discovers the secret of a thieves' den and opens it with the magic phrase "Open Sesame." The thieves try to kill Ali Baba, and he has saved his life, protected his family, and overcame many challenges.

The History of Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves - Illustrated by H. Granville Fell (The Banbury Cross Series)

The Banbury Cross Series was a collection of 12 volumes of books edited by Grace Rhys and published in London by Dent in the 1890s. Each book is attractively illustrated with full page and partial page pen and ink drawings in a classic Art Nouveau style by leading artists of the era. Here the Eastern classic Ali Baba is reworked and presented with H. Granville Fell's stunning black and white illustrations that beautifully complement the oriental traditions of the tale. Many of the earliest children's books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. Pook Press are working to republish these classic works in affordable, high quality editions, using the original text and artwork so these works can delight another generation of children.
