The tenth Portuguese Conference on Arti?cial Intelligence, EPIA 2001 was held in Porto and continued the tradition of previous conferences in the series. It returned to the city in which the ?rst conference took place, about 15 years ago. The conference was organized, as usual, under the auspices of the Portuguese Association for Arti?cial Intelligence (APPIA, http://www.appia.pt). EPIA maintained its international character and continued to provide a forum for p- senting and discussing researc h on di?erent aspects of Arti?cial Intelligence. To promote motivated discussions among participants, this conference streng- ened the role of the thematic workshops. These were not just satellite events, but rather formed an integral part of the conference, with joint sessions when justi?ed. This had the advantage that the work was presented to a motivated audience. This was the ?rst time that EPIA embarked on this experience and so provided us with additional challenges.
Machine Learning and Knowledge Discovery in Databases
The three volume set LNAI 9284, 9285, and 9286 constitutes the refereed proceedings of the European Conference on Machine Learning and Knowledge Discovery in Databases, ECML PKDD 2015, held in Porto, Portugal, in September 2015. The 131 papers presented in these proceedings were carefully reviewed and selected from a total of 483 submissions. These include 89 research papers, 11 industrial papers, 14 nectar papers, and 17 demo papers. They were organized in topical sections named: classification, regression and supervised learning; clustering and unsupervised learning; data preprocessing; data streams and online learning; deep learning; distance and metric learning; large scale learning and big data; matrix and tensor analysis; pattern and sequence mining; preference learning and label ranking; probabilistic, statistical, and graphical approaches; rich data; and social and graphs. Part III is structured in industrial track, nectar track, and demo track.
Progress in Artificial Intelligence
The two-volume set LNAI 14115 and 14116 constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 22nd EPIA Conference on Progress in Artificial Intelligence, EPIA 2023, held in Faial Island, Azores, in September 2023. The 85 full papers presented in these proceedings were carefully reviewed and selected from 163 submissions. Machine Learning and Knowledge Discovery in Databases

Discovery Science
This volume contains the papers presented at the 5th International Conference on Discovery Science (DS 2002) held at the Mövenpick Hotel, Lub ̈eck, G- many, November 24-26, 2002. The conference was supported by CorpoBase, DFKI GmbH, and JessenLenz. The conference was collocated with the 13th International Conference on - gorithmic Learning Theory (ALT 2002). Both conferences were held in parallel and shared?ve invited talks as well as all social events. The combination of ALT 2002 and DS 2002 allowed for a comprehensive treatment of recent de- lopments in computational learning theory and machine learning - some of the cornerstones of discovery science. In response to the call for papers 76 submissions were received. The program committee selected 17 submissions as regular papers and 29 submissions as poster presentations of which 27 have been submitted for publication. This selection was based on clarity, signi?cance, and originality, as well as on relevance to the rapidly evolving?eld of discovery science.
