New Adventures in Language and Interaction
In this book sixteen international scholars of language and social interaction describe their distinct frameworks of analysis. Taking conversation analysis and interactional sociolinguistics as their points of departure and investigating ordinary conversation as well as institutions such as health care, therapy, and city council meetings, they often incorporate gesture, prosody, and the listener's behavior in the analysis of talk. While some approaches are grounded in a critique of the major schools of interaction analysis, others integrate the interactionist perspective with ideas from fields such as systemic-functional linguistics, distributed cognition, and the sociology of knowledge. Each chapter combines a statement of the terms and methods of analysis with an exemplary analysis of a moment of interaction. "New Adventures in Language and Interaction" gives an excellent overview of the novelty and diversity of interaction-focused perspectives on language and of the heterogeneity of approaches that have evolved from the pioneering work of Sacks and Schegloff, Gumperz, and their co-workers.
Pragmatics in Speech and Language Pathology
The selected contributions in this volume bring together applications of pragmatics in speech and language pathology, as well as discussions of the applicability of different theoretical strands of the study of human linguistic interaction and its cognitive bases to the field of communication disorders. The authors address practical issues in the classification, assessment and treatment of pragmatic disorders both in developmental and acquired contexts. Further major concerns are the theoretical foundations of clinical pragmatics (such as linguistic pragmatics, functional approaches to language analysis, and cognitive science), and the development of clinical pragmatics.
Methods in Clinical Phonetics
This book is written for the beginning student of communication disorders with a basic understanding of phonetics, or the practising speech-language therapist whose phonetic training may need updating. It introduces the reader to the main areas of phonetics, and the main methods through which the phonetician reduces speech data to a permanent record. The book, then, illustrates the three main approaches to the investigation of spoken language; articulatory, acoustic, and auditory. Further, it describes how impressionistic phonetic transcription through symbolisation differs from instrumental phonetic techniques. For each of these areas of discussion, chapters are provided that examine the general phonetic aspects, followed by chapters that illustrate their application to clinical data. The authors are both phoneticians with experience of investigating both normal and disordered speech through both impressionistic and instrumental means, and this is the first book in this market that describes a whole range of data reduction techniques and illustrates them with data relevant to the student and practitioner of communication disorders.

This volume brings together contributors from 30 universities in 22 countries. It includes both theoretical papers which present new methods of analysis and practical studies of dialogue, much of which was recorded in work settings - a binary focus encapsulated in the title, »Working with Dialogue«. The settings from which the data was collected are diverse: the media, the courtroom, the classroom, the home and the clinic, as well as from literary texts. The book is ordered in such a way that each paper links theoretically, methodologically and/or topically with those on either side of it.
