Jewish Women

Jewish Women: Between Conformity and Agency examines the concepts of gender and sexuality through the primary lens of visual and material culture from antiquity through to the present day. The backbone of this transhistorical and transcontextual study is the question of Jewish women’s agency in four different geographical, chronological, and methodological contexts, beginning with women’s dress codes in Roman-Byzantine Syro-Palestine, continuing with rituals of purity in medieval Ashkenaz, worship in papal Avignon and the Comtat Venaissin, and ending with marriage and divorce in Israeli film. Each of these explorations is interested in creating a dialogue between the patriarchal legacy o...

Shaping Identities in a Holy Land

In the 88 years between its establishment by the victorious armies of the First Crusade and its collapse following the disastrous defeat at Hattin, the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem was the site of vibrant artistic and architectural activity. As the crusaders rebuilt some of Christendom's most sacred churches, or embellished others with murals and mosaics, a unique and highly original art was created. Focusing on the sculptural, mosaic, and mural cycles adorning some of the most important shrines in the Kingdom (such as the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, The Basilica of the Annunciation, and the Church of the Nativity), this book offers a broad perspective of Crusader art and architecture. Among...

From the third through the sixth centuries, the binding of Isaac saw a flourish of representation in Christian, Byzantine and Jewish art. These images engaged the viewer in a religious experience that highlighted sacrifice, salvation and liturgy, and reflected an increased visual richness of sacrificial and liturgical concepts. In contrast to earlier scholarship on the sacrifice of Isaac that offered general descriptions of the period and digressions on isolated images, this book presents the interpretation of specific works depicting the binding of Isaac by his father Abraham across time, examining the iconography, style, social context and purpose of the sacrifice in the artworks.

The Poems of Optatian

For the first time, the poems and accompanying letters of Publilius Optatianus Porfyrius (Optatian) are published here with a translation and detailed commentary, along with a full introduction to Optatian's work during this period.Optatian was sent into exile by Constantine sometime after the Emperor's ascent to power in Rome in 312 AD. Women have been rabbis for over forty years. No longer are women rabbis a unique phenomenon, rather they are part of the fabric of Jewish life. In this anthology, rabbis and scholars from across the Jewish world reflect back on the historic significance of women in the rabbinate and explore issues related to both the professional and personal lives of women rabbis. This collection examines the ways in which the reality of women in the rabbinate has impacted on all aspects of Jewish life, including congregational culture, liturgical development, life cycle ritual, the Jewish healing movement, spirituality, theology, and more. Nová kniha historika a archeologa Petra Charváta poodhaluje historické pozadí proslulých vyprávění o nejstarších českých dějinách. Čtivým a poutavým způsobem zasazuje děje českého dávnověku do širších souvislostí, využívá přitom poznatky archeologie, religionistiky a dalších oborů. Pozornosti se dostává též tomu, kdo soubor starých pověstí poprvé zachytil v ucelené podobě, svatovítskému děkanovi a prvnímu českému kronikáři Kosmovi.
