Reading Country is about the relationship between two 19th century explorers of the interior of Australia, one an Aboriginal Tommy Windich, and the other a European, John Forrest. The relationship is illuminated by steganography on the gravestone of Tommy Windich. The gravestone was commissioned by John Forrest and his brother Alexander and the steganography is a hitherto hidden text detailing the attitudes of the designer of the gravestone, presumed to be john Forrest.
Diary (15x12 cm.) bound with red fabric and on front cover: "Year book your memory in cloth covers 1912 (in black) compliments of Emmons Loom Harness Co., Lawrence, Mass. (in gold)". The spine reads "1912". Inside front cover is a picture of a factory and reads "established in eighteen sixty-six." Front fly leaf reads "This year book is the property of Allan Willis from Benton (Boston?)". Title page is the same as the cover without the compliments, but in addition reads "when ordering duplicates, mention this number No,. 24 B.W. Hurbsch, New York". The diary's daily page is filled in completely in two different types of handwriting, chiefly referring to the weather. There are a few mentions of events and at the back a recipe for a "good kidney remedy". Full calendars printed in the back for 1911-1913. This diary is a typical advertisement for a company, in this case the Emmons Loom Harness Co.
