From the country’s foremost expert on “cold feet,” a smart and compassionate guide for the bride-to-be who thinks she should be blissfully happy—but is freaking out instead For most brides, the elation of engagement is accompanied by a cocktail of unexpected emotions: Anxiety about making a lifelong commitment. Sadness about leaving their single life behind. Confusion when even simple decisions—should we serve chicken cordon bleu or beef Wellington?—bring them to tears. Worst of all, since everyone around them expects them to be happy, few brides feel there’s anyone to turn to with these conflicting feelings. Written by one of Modern Bride’s “25 Trendsetters of 2006”—and targeting the 2.5 million women who get engaged each year—Emotionally Engagedis the only book geared toward helping brides survive their engagements and emerge as stronger, happier, better- adjusted married women. In the book, Allison Moir-Smith shares her threestage, tried-and-true process from her workshops and individual therapy sessions, along with the stories of over a dozen brides-to-be and newlyweds, helping readers transform their bridal blues into bridal bliss.

Clearly whip smart, Margaux Bergen has one of those rare voices that pulls you in and makes you want to keep reading.” — Amy Chua, author of Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother An inspiring, piercingly honest user's guide to life, written for the author's daughter and given to her on her first day of college, reflecting tough lessons about family, work, and marriage. The old buildings and historic places of British Columbia form a kind of "roadside memory," a tangible link with stories of settlement, change, and abandonment that reflect the great themes of BC's history. Michael Kluckner began painting his personal map of the province in a watercolour sketchbook. In 1999, after he put a few of the sketches on his website, a network of correspondents emerged that eventually led him to the family letters, photo albums, and memories from a disappearing era of the province. Vanishing British Columbia is a record of these places and the stories they tell, presenting a compelling argument for stewardship of regional history in the face of urbanization and globalization.

A witty, thought-provoking celebration of why marriage still matters-and how to make yours work. Taking anecdotes from history, the latest research, and insights about couples who stayed the course, writer and journalist Catherine Blyth offers an engaging tour of married life with entertaining advice on how to enjoy a successful marriage. She also shows how to deal with wandering eyes or in-laws who should be outlawed, and answers vital questions such as: Can housework improve sex life? Why should husbands argue? And why must wives relax? In an age when skeptics like Elizabeth Gilbert and Lori Gottlieb urge us to "beware" or to "settle," The Art of Marriage offers heartfelt inspiration. Readers will learn why marriage still casts its spell, and how-with optimism and some tactics-it can be better than ever.

The popular image of Scotland is dominated by widely recognized elements of Celtic culture. But a significant non-Celtic influence on Scotland's history has been largely ignored for centuries? This book argues that much of Scotland's history and culture from 1100 forward is Jewish. The authors provide evidence that many of the national heroes, villains, rulers, nobles, traders, merchants, bishops, guild members, burgesses, and ministers of Scotland were of Jewish descent, their ancestors originating in France and Spain. Much of the traditional historical account of Scotland, it is proposed, rests on fundamental interpretive errors, perpetuated in order to affirm Scotland's identity as a Celtic, Christian society. A more accurate and profound understanding of Scottish history has thus been buried. The authors' wide-ranging research includes examination of census records, archaeological artifacts, castle carvings, cemetery inscriptions, religious seals, coinage, burgess and guild member rolls, noble genealogies, family crests, portraiture, and geographic place names.

In 1977 Bermuda, the tranquil and beautiful vacationland, erupted in race riots. The island was in a state of anxiety and upheaval. Partners in Peace and Prosperity: A Premier and a Governor in Bermuda, 1977-1981 recalls this volatile time in Bermuda’s history. Two men led Bermuda through this tumultuous, intense, and important chapter in her history, an era that began with executions and race riots and ended with the initiation of greater political, social, and economic opportunities for all Bermudians. The Premier of Bermuda, David Gibbons, was ensconced in business, politics, culture, and society in Bermuda, and was deeply dedicated to the country’s success and happiness. The Governor of Bermuda, Sir Peter Ramsbotham, brought to Bermuda the wisdom, experience, and intelligence of a lifelong diplomat. Together they navigated Bermuda and her people through these turbulent times. Allison Moir has written an engaging record of this era. She conducted extensive interviews with Gibbons and Ramsbotham as well as with many other prominent Bermudians and Americans. Partners in Peace and Prosperity offers an in-depth look at an important chapter in Bermuda’s recent history.
