In this honest discussion of mental health, the founder of Therapy for Women explores our reasons for drinking alcohol—and the benefits of taking a break. When “retired party girl” and popular therapist Amanda White admitted she was an alcoholic, it wasn’t because she’d done something outrageous while under the influence, like land herself in jail or get married in Vegas. It was because she realized three things: 1. Alcohol was making her life worse. 2. Moderation wasn’t helping. 3. She could not be a therapist if she continued to use alcohol to numb her life. Something needed to change—not just her relationship with alcohol, but her relationship with herself. Choosing not to d...

White Utopias

Transformational festivals, from Burning Man to Lightning in a Bottle, Bhakti Fest, and Wanderlust, are massive events that attract thousands of participants to sites around the world. In this groundbreaking book, Amanda J. Lucia shows how these festivals operate as religious institutions for “spiritual, but not religious” (SBNR) communities. Whereas previous research into SBNR practices and New Age religion has not addressed the predominantly white makeup of these communities, White Utopias examines the complicated, often contradictory relationships with race at these events, presenting an engrossing ethnography of SBNR practices. Lucia contends that participants create temporary utopias through their shared commitments to spiritual growth and human connection. But they also participate in religious exoticism by adopting Indigenous and Indic spiritualities, a practice that ultimately renders them exclusive, white utopias. Focusing on yoga’s role in disseminating SBNR values, Lucia offers new ways of comprehending transformational festivals as significant cultural phenomena.

Suicide Salad

Suicide Salad is a tossed salad of true stories and reflections from a brave woman who learned how to add enough salad dressing to enable her to digest the chunkier, least savory bits of life she kept finding in her bowl. Expect a few rough journeys as a testimony to how resilient one soul can be in the face of adversity. As of June 2021, the WHO estimated an annual global suicide rate of over 700,000 (and many more unsuccessful attempts). It is crucial to dispel the stigmas attached to suicide as a starting point to heal various inter-generational traumas. With this book, the author aims to create greater social awareness of suicide, and other challenges, to ensure that these stigmas are di...

This Is My Daughter

A New York Times Notable Book: A luminous, deeply affecting story of divorce, remarriage, and parenthood. Peter and Emma, two single parents who have found love again after failed first marriages, dream of a peaceful and happy blended family with each of their daughters under one roof. They navigate this treacherous territory with the best of intentions, but face resistance from the girls, who, like many children of divorce, find their relationships tinged by grief, anger, and resentment. Emma’s three-year-old daughter, Tess, takes to the arrangement while Amanda, Peter’s sullen and unhappy seven-year-old, views it as a disaster rather than a fresh start. Over the course of this emotional powerhouse of a novel, Amanda becomes increasingly hostile and alienated—until one night she commits an act that threatens the already fragile bonds of the fledgling family. Set on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, This Is My Daughter is a skillful and sensitive portrayal of the challenges facing modern families from master of the contemporary novel Roxana Robinson, whose acute observations of domestic life invite comparison to John Cheever and Henry James.

White Girl

There is no greater act of self-hatred than the mother who murders her child in the womb, refusing to give birth to another of her kind, horrified at the thought of staring daily into the face of her mirrored reflection. How could I willingly give birth to a demon? In the end, the choice had been mine alone to make. Abandoning hope, I opted to put her to death. In my mind, she who has no life has been named Redemption. It had taken Melanie nearly 30 years to unearth the woman that she truly was, to outgrow her shame, to overcome the pain that lie within the recesses of her heart. Since birth, she'd been defined by external forces.
