This series contains a variety of printed material pertaining to the mission work of the American Lutheran Church (ALC) and its Board of Foreign Missions (BFM), as well as material pertaining to foreign mission work in general. These records are from 1883-1960 with the bulk of the material dating from 1944-1960. Types of records include printed reports, background papers, press releases, promotional and outreach material, minutes, business correspondence, annual reports, essays, articles, circular letters, and mission bulletins and publications.
Correspondence and Financial Reports, Board of Foreign Missions
This series comprises American Lutheran Church (ALC) Board of Trustees records pertaining to Board of Foreign Missions (BFM) activities from 1931-1960. Records include typewritten and handwritten business correspondence from 1931-1959 and printed yearly, and in some cases monthly, balance sheets for the BFM from 1944-1960.
Lutheran Mission New Guinea Files
This series comprises material pertaining to the New Guinea mission field during the period of time in which the Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Iowa and Other States (Iowa Synod), and later the American Lutheran Church (ALC), worked with the United Evangelical Lutheran Church of Australia to administer orphaned German mission fields in New Guinea. The mission at this time was referred to as Lutheran Mission New Guinea (LMNG). Records are from 1924-1949 with the majority dating from 1931-1934. It is unclear if the records were kept by the LMNG itself and then later sent to the ALC's Board of Foreign Missions (BFM), or if the board itself generated the majority of the records.
Reports
Box 1 begins with some general reports of F. Otto Thiele (Director of the combined Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Iowa and Other States and United Evangelical Lutheran Church in Australia work), and field trip reports of Theodore P. Fricke (Executive Secretary of the Board of Foreign Missions of the American Lutheran Church) and others.
Financial Records
This series comprises financial records from 1932-1960 pertaining to the American Lutheran Church (ALC) Board of Foreign Missions (BFM). The bulk of these records are copies of applications for appropriation submitted by the BFM to the ALC Board of Trustees, through the Department of Stewardship and Finance. Copies of applications exist for BFM budgets from 1942-1960. Prior to that time, applications were filed for the separate India and New Guinea missions. These applications provide an overall picture of the BFM budget situation from 1942-1960. Any original applications are assumed to be filed with Board of Trustees records. In addition to the individual applications, for each year there is also accompanying material providing further explanation for various aspects of the budget request.
American Lutheran Church (1930-1960), Commission on Mexican Missions, Minutes
This series contains the typed minutes of the Commission on Mexican Missions (CMM), originally the Board on Mexican Missions. Meetings were held in various churches of San Antonio, San Juan, and other locations in Texas, as well as periodically in Mexico. Some meetings were held during the Texas District annual conventions. Earlier Mexican Mission minutes can be found with the Joint Synod of Ohio records. Also included are Executive Committee meeting minutes and Texas District Committee on Appeals (1932). Minutes
The records consist of minutes of the New Guinea Section of the Board of Foreign Missions of the American Lutheran Church. Box 1 contains bound copies from 1919-1940. Box 2 contains loose carbon or mimeographed copies for 1932-1944.
