Drug Therapy in Nursing

This text presents a totally nursing-focused framework for teaching and learning nursing pharmacology, and "places the patient" at the center of all drug administration decisions and considerations. The book presents core drug knowledge using prototypes of different drug classes and emphasizes core patient variables that influence the patient's response to therapy. This thoroughly updated Third Edition covers newly approved drugs, has separate chapters on drugs affecting fungal and viral infections, and includes more pathophysiology information. FDA Black Box warnings have been added to the discussion of each prototype when applicable, and safety alerts have been added to emphasize prevention of common medication errors. A companion Website offers student and instructor ancillaries including NCLEX®-style questions, pathophysiology animations, medication administration videos, and dosage calculation quizzes.

Aromatase Inhibitors

Aromatase Inhibitors

Many breast tumours are dependent upon oestrogen for their development and continued growth. Over the last 25 years hormone therapy has progressed from the irreversible destruction of endocrine glands to the use of drugs that reversibly suppress oestrogen synthesis or action. The inhibition of oestrogen synthesis is most readily achieved by inhibiting the final step in the pathway of oestrogen biosynthesis, the reaction which transforms androgens into oestrogens by creating an aromatic ring in the steroid molecule (hence the enzyme's trivial name, aromatase). Whereas the first aromatase inhibitors to be used therapeutically could be shown to produce drug-induced inhibition of the enzyme and therapeutic benefits in patients with breast cancer, they were not particularly potent and lacked specificity. However, second-generation drugs were developed and most recently third-generation inhibitors have evolved which possess remarkable specificity and potency. Initial results from clinical trials suggest that these agents will become the cornerstones of future endocrine therapy.

A definitive reference for researchers working on problems involving chirality. Presenting state-of-the-art information, this volume covers all the major modes of separation and offers contributions from the leading researchers who developed these techniques. Four chapters provide a detailed review of the commonly used columns: brush type, cyclodextrin, polysaccaride carbonate, and protein. Many of the papers focus on HPLC, a technique which is also ideally suited for large scale preparation of optical isomers. In addition, the volume provides significant discussion on the use of chiral discriminators or selectors.

The Anticancer Drugs

This is an up-to-date review of the pharmacology, mechanisms of action, development of resistance, and toxicity of cancer chemotherapeutic agents. A rationale for their clinical use, based on cancer cell biology, is given for each class of drugs.

Endocrine Therapies in Breast and Prostate Cancer

It has been recognized for many years that cancers originating in the breast and prostate gland are frequently 'endocrine-dependent. ' Traditional thera pies included surgical endocrine ablative procedures or pharmacologic hor mone administration, both designed to antagonize the stimulatory effects of sex steroid hormones. In the past decade, several new treatment strategies for these tumors have emerged from basic studies in reproductive biology and mechanisms of action of steroid hormones. In some instances, these new treatments have elimin ated or reduced the need for major surgical ablative procedures or for toxic hormone therapy. The clinical role for other new treatments has not yet be...
