This book examines over half a century of economic policy in Egypt through an assessment of the extent to which it has achieved the structural transformation which comes with growth. In particular, the book asks whether economic development in Egypt has been marked by successful industrialization shifting over time to high-productivity sectors. In tracing Egypt's industrial development since 1952, the book considers the state of structural transformation and diversification of the Egyptian economy, the extent to which industrial policy was a success, and whether it structurally transformed the economy. The book also assesses what policy makers in Egypt and elsewhere in the Middle East can learn from the past, in order to ensure sustained economic growth in the future.

This study analyses how strengths and weaknesses of economic, societal, political and environmental structures played out during the Covid-19 crisis in Africa since March 2020. It comprises the analysis of (a) direct impacts of the pandemic as well as of policy responses such as lockdowns and their potential determinants; (b) indirect effects of lockdowns and policy responses to the pandemic on economic, social, political and environmental domains in the light of structural strengths and weaknesses...

Tunisia's Economic Development

This book identifies the differences in growth and development, and the various factors lying behind them, across both Middle East and North African (MENA) and East Asian countries over the 1960‒2020 period. It considers a very wide range of factors, compares initial situations, institutions, and government policies, the dynamic responses to changing circumstances, and discusses the inability of the governments of the MENA region to achieve not only political reform, but also the kinds of economic reform that would allow their citizens to prosper in an increasingly globalized world. The book focuses on Tunisia. Since its independence in 1956 until 2010, Tunisia had considerable success rel...

The data pertaining to this study was the result of an exhaustive investigation into the nature of the firms composing the Egyptian garment industry. The data capture various characteristics of the firms relating to each one's level and order of integration into the production of fabrics and garments and into retail. Part 1 of the study contains the data obtained from the initial screening interviews administered to each firm by phone to determine the prevalence and nature of integration present in its operations. This information was used to determine which one of the four study questionnaires would be administered to each firm during the final interview. Each questionnaire produced four da...

Arab Society in Revolt

For every pithy conceptualization of complex events, there are additional lenses through which to examine them. One of the several virtues of this book is precisely that it brings different perspectives to bear on the complexity, diversity, and uncertainty of recent and current events in the Arab world. The thirteen authors concentrate on the critical social forces shaping the region—demography, religion, gender, telecommunication connectivity, and economic structures—and they are painstakingly analyzed and evaluated.—from the foreword by Strobe Talbott, president of the Brookings Institution The Arab Spring will be remembered as a period of great change for the Arab states of North Af...
