Poems to Ana

Poems to Ana is a book written by a man for a woman, with all the love that this world allowed him to have for her. Here presented in a bilingual Portuguese - English edition, these are poems written for, but also dedicated to, a woman when everything was far from perfect in her life. This small compilation contains completely honest verses, both truthful and beautiful, which were written with all the loyalty and compassion possible to a man. More than love poems, or friendship ones, these are poems in which each word was written with the honesty of trying to cheer up whoever is having a bad period in their lives. Compiled across months and originally published as a gift to Ana in her birthday, this is a book of poems for the Ana that exists in every woman, by a man who, more than anything in this world, wanted to make her smile, and which is here now available in bilingual form, for every English-speaker who is either trying to learn Portuguese, or just wants a beautiful poetry book written an ocean away.

Subject Pronoun Expression in Spanish

Much recent scholarship has sought to identify the linguistic and social factors that favor the expression or omission of subject pronouns in Spanish. This volume brings together leading experts on the topic of language variation in Spanish to provide a panoramic view of research trends, develop probabilistic models of grammar, and investigate the impact of language contact on pronoun expression. The book consists of three sections. The first studies the distributional patterns and conditioning forces on subject pronoun expression in four monolingual varieties—Dominican, Colombian, Mexican, and Peninsular—and makes cross-dialectal comparisons. In the second section, experts explore Spanish in contact with English, Maya, Catalan, and Portuguese to determine the extent to which each language influences this syntactic variable. The final section examines the acquisition of variable subject pronoun expression among monolingual and bilingual children as well as adult second language learners.

Practices of Projection

"This volume seeks make an intervention in the fields of film studies and visual culture by examining projection as a pivotal element in the continuing technological becoming of media systems. The chapters come together to paint a picture of projection that incorporates a range of practices across time and space. From studies of traveling projectionists in early 20th century Scotland and modern-day Uruguay to considerations of the (almost) lost mediums of the slide tape and the magic lantern, the authors invite us to consider the varied nature of the technologies, apparatuses, practices and histories of projection in a holistic manner. In doing so, the volume departs from the psychological metaphors of projection often employed by apparatus theory, instead emphasizing the performative character of the moving image and the labor of the various actors involved in the utterance of such texts"--

23 European Symposium on Computer Aided Process Engineering

The world globalization has been creating a very strong competition amongst companies. To maintain their market position, companies need to guarantee that all their activities are performed with high efficacy and efficiency standards, allowing not only a company profit but also a good company image. Such image is not definitely related to the service level but also to the way environmental and social aspects are treated within the companies' strategy. This paper explores these concerns and presents a simple and systematic methodology for supply chain analyzes. The methodology will screen and identify the main bottlenecks, regarding sustainable factors (economic, environmental and social) in any supply chain. A set of new indicators are used, which assess important operational issues in the supply chain as well as sustainability issues. A case study is presented to highlight the applicability of the developed methodology.

Encounters in Video Art in Latin America

  • Categories: Art

With insightful essays and interviews, this volume examines how artists have experimented with the medium of video across different regions of Latin America since the 1960s. The emergence of video art in Latin America is marked by multiple points of development, across more than a dozen artistic centers, over a period of more than twenty-five years. When it was first introduced during the 1960s, video was seen as empowering: the portability of early equipment and the possibility of instant playback allowed artists to challenge and at times subvert the mainstream media. Video art in Latin America was—and still is—closely related to the desire for social change. Themes related to gender, e...
