Ancestors of Timothy W Hogan Vol. 2 Family Groups
The ancestors of Timothy Hogan can be traced from Greene County, Tennessee before the Civil War to Haddon Hall in Derbyshire, England where his ancestors were Lords and Ladies of ancient England and Wales. Many lines go back to the ancient leaders of Wales including Rhys aps Griffith and to the Merovingian Kings and Queens of Normandy, France. Timothy's Swedish line, which came to Iowa in the USA, came directly from Sweden where they can be traced back to the sea kings of Uppsala, Sweden in about 500 AD. Continuing back some of his European ancestors, they can be traced to Seleucus Nicator in ancient Syria, the father of Helen of Troy. It is easy to imagine that some of the members of the Hogan Family retained the ambition and traits of their ancient ancestors. Many of his forefathers in Colonial America were Freemasons and instrumental in forming the burgeoning American Nation. Minnesota Swedes
Many of the individuals in this study were closely related. They came from an agricultural community in Sweden dominated by a large estate. The pioneers came in search of 'free' land, and they found it in Goodhue County. Former neighbors settled close to one another. Many of the descendants are still tied to the land. The author has endeavored to trace the immigrants from cradle to grave to find out how they fared in their new homeland. But she did not stop there. Whenever possible, she continued her search among the descendants. There are extracts from official records in Sweden and in America for about 320 immigrants. Including their families, the study encompasses more than one thousand individuals. Explore the intricate kinship within the group, name-changes, moves, occupations, farm locations, family members, and much more. The author, a native of Sweden, has studied and written about Swedish immigration history for the last 30 years. This book is a continuation of Minnesota Swedes: The Emigration From Trolle Ljungby 1855-1912 , which she had published in 1996.
Sinners and Citizens
Sinners and Citizens explores how sexual habits changed in Sweden during its development from an agrarian society into a modern welfare state. Jens Rydström examines the history of homosexuality and bestiality in that country to consider why these sexual practices have been so closely linked in virtually all Western societies. He limns sharply the distinctive experience of rural life, showing that to regularly witness farm animals stirred passions and sparked ideas, especially among young farmhands. Based on medical journals, psychiatric reports, and court records from the period, as well as testimonies from men in diaries, letters, and interviews, Sinners and Citizens reveals that bestiality was once a dreaded crime in Sweden. But in time, mention of the practice disappeared completely from legal and medical debates. This, Rydström contends, is because models of penetrative sodomy shifted from bestiality to homosexuality as Sweden transformed from a rural society into a more urban one. As the nation's economy and culture became less identified with the countryside, so too did its idea of deviant sexual behavior.
